GOT CHUKARS!

Post by TAK » Mon Sep 19, 2005 12:14 am

Our Utah Chukar Hunt opened on Sat, I never made it out until Sunday Afternoon.
Ohh Boy was it a great hunt! It has been so long since I had a great hunt like this! Ya no Crap I passed on a Trial with my best friend to go chase Chukars! I needed it! I GOT IT!
I have hunted many of Chukar in my day but have never seen as many as I did today in a short time!

To make it even better.... All the birds were found on a big flat! Ya the flat even had a slight grade down with the wind blowing up to the dogs!

I cut the dogs loose Speed and Clown. Speed being a young dog blew out of there like gang busters only to find himself busting a giant covey of birds. Way out of gun range but not Collar range. He did after short chase stop to the flush and me tearing up over all the birds gone!

Well I got him in around Clown hoping he would show the young feller a thing or two about wild birds.

It was not a 100 yards from where Speed busted the big covey that Clown hit point. Wild birds I mind you and I was not walking slow to the point. Speed backed him. I got within about 20 yards before a dozen or so birds flew. I got ONE! Had to double tap him to get him too!

To my suprize Clown stood at point and Speed made the retrieve. This had me a bit baffled as Clown has done a bit to much NSTRA to let a dog get his retrieve. Well I just thought he was being a nice guy and letting the pup get the first taste. NOT, he had 3 more birds out to his side! No shells in the gun.

I hunted for about an hour and never moved any more birds. Speed again started to get way out there, at some point I have not a clue were he went???

I got on the whistle and tapped the collar a couple of times. Nothing I started back to the truck and seen him by it about half mile or so. I yelled and tapped the collar. He was on his way back to dad.

I walked his way also and Clown hit point to my right about 200 yards. I went to him and got one shot at a covey that dove off the cliff. I nailed on perfect but there was not going to be a retrieve. It was at least a 60 ft drop. Little disapointed in myself for even shooting.

Well again we were heading to the Truck and Speed was still on his way back and Clown got real birdy and started his cat creeping, "Running birds!" I stayed on his tail as close as I could. Bam he hit the point.

Speed out there about 70 yards stopped to back, I think. He was looking off to his left and my right. I moved in and the birds just started to fly. 1st shot dead bird, 2nd missed bird clean. Reload Reload shot again nothing but air! Speed broke and tried to get the retrieve from Clown but that was not working.

Got my 2nd bird in hand and toward the truck we go. Both dogs need a drink and the hydration pack slowly leaked all the water out!

I was just about to the truck when Speed stood like he was on point. I say like he was on point cuz after the first covey and him getting corrected for it as he did, he became very cautious. I whisled and he never moved. Clown thought he was on Point to. He backed him. I went toward him, was about 15 yards away and told him to heel. He did not want to do that. He stood real tall and with Nose in the air like Ol Honky Tonk Attitude. I walked out front of him and kicked around. I told him nothing leave it, come on!
He stood and I started to him to grab his collar and lead him off when I heard it behind me. Two birds out about 15 yards busted up. I hit the first as clean as ever and the second I took one leg out and part of his wing. Speed did all he could to stop the bird but it made it over the edge. THis was my 2nd bird I killed that I lost so I gave up for the night and cleaned my 3 birds of a 5 bird limit!

One thing I wish I could have done is take some pictures and had someone there to see what I seen!

Great trip. I went out for some grouse on Sunday and came up empty. Didn't even see a bird. Sounds like I should have met up with you.

TAK,
I also found quite a few birds this weekend, but mine were definately not on flat ground! The dog did good and I also wish I would have brought a camera.
Sounds like we need to get together so I can show my dog some flat land chukars!

Glad to hear that about Speed.
My friend and I managed to scrape down 7.
We hunted all morning and covered some big country but no birds. Saw alot more people this year.
Got back to the truck. loaded the wore out dogs and headed down the road. We turned a corner and there were about 25 chukars off the side of the road.
Well I can now call myself a road hunter cause I shot three out of revenge!. After the covey busted we turned the dogs loose again. My friends GSP nailed one right on top of a straight vertical drop off to a open pit mine. No shot!.
Shot one more as another hunter missed it across the canyon and it flew right to me.
My pup is still trying to figure out the game but we are sure having fun doing it.
TAK did you get my email about training?

I would say nice looking pictures, even with them being pointers I would still say nice lookig pics! But sorry TAK, the Dodge and the Polaris ruin the whole thing.

Put the pics in photoshop and crop in a Ford F-150 or Super Duty and either a Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki or Yamaha and I'll re-evaluate my opinion!

Birddog,

Leave the man alone for displaying his good judgement. I too have a Dodge and Polaris. Several friends have switched to Dodge's since they have gotten past the hype and are able to make good rational judgements. The only weakness they still show is they have GSP's or no dog at all.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.
