Kansas 09
Re: Kansas 09
recently moved here to the SW corner, think I'll be arround-
quail and pheasants calling quite a bit- saw a hen pheasant with 6 chicks- couple deer, and a nice Antelope- can see quite a distance so I bought a new pair of binoculars

Planning on bringing the horses and a string of dogs to the Grasslands late in the season whenthe crowds have called it a season and try our luck for awhile!
Has nothing to do with luck just boot leather and a fine GWP...

Ain't no birds here. Heard they are all stacked up in Illinois.
Re: Kansas 09
I'll be going to KS, but not for the opener. I'll wait a couple of weeks until the crowd thins out. I'll come back again later in late December/early January.

Re: Kansas 09
I plan on fighting the crowd for the opener unless OK quail numbers look REALLY good. I usually make 5-7 trips to KS every year, I will also be SW of Amarillo for the TX pheasant opener out there it is all private land, no crowds to fight.

Re: Kansas 09
KS is usually too warm and too crowded for me the 1st week of the season. Instead, I will go west to MT to start my season on sharptails and Huns. Then, I hunt SD the 2nd or 3rd week of their pheasant season. Most of the crowd will be gone by then, and there will still be plenty of birds. I probably won't hunt KS until it turns colder in late Nov. - Jan.
Re: Kansas 09
The first week of the season during the work week how crowded is it....if you willing to walk can you get out and away from a lot of people?
Re: Kansas 09
that's one you are just going to have to come and find out about- sometimes it's not so good to have a big running dog

Re: Kansas 09
I only tried opening week in KS once. The area I hunted didn't have huge tracts of land enrolled walk-in program, so there was no walking a long distance to get away from other hunters. I encountered hunters in a lot of the spots I had picked out of the Walk-in Atlas, so I moved on to other spots. Some of the spots I did hunt appeared to have been hunted recently.luke0927 wrote:The first week of the season during the work week how crowded is it....if you willing to walk can you get out and away from a lot of people?

Re: Kansas 09
You can have good hunting during the opening week, but just don't think you will be alone, Each of the past 3 openers we have gotten up early arrived at our chosen spot well before shooting time only to have multiple groups jump in on the same piece of ground we were hunting after we started. Trust me every piece of WIHA ground gets pounded multiple times opening weekend. Heck, 2 yrs ago we had exclusive access to a large farm and each spot we we on it had tracks and empties on it before we got there. It's a good thing we never saw anyone trespass, because the owner may have done something violent. To say he was incensed was an understatement. Irregardless of the competition factor, the hunting is still good.
I agree with Prairie Hunter that opening weekend can be too hot, last 3 have been in the upper 70's to 80's in the afternoon. Personally I have taken more birds later in the season when it cools and calms down.
Early indications point to a decent season as the spring has been relatively cool and wheat harvest is a bit behind schedule so the chicks have a extra week or two to move out of the wheat.

Re: Kansas 09
sometimes it just pays to sleep in a bit and get out later- there's a rush to be at fields- birds move around quite a bit- some hunters move too fast- nothing wrong with waiting till they leave- if you have pointing dogs you might pay attention to folks who don't have dogs or flushing dogs
as is well known- not all the birds are killed in the first two weeks anyway

I will be out every weekend I can sneak away from the house! If anyone wants to get together, let me know, as I usually hunt alone (other than my 2 dogs).

I agree with Muddycreek... No birds here in Kansas.
I can't wait till fall is here and bird season opens! I am also stoked because the wife and I are expecting our first born on Nov 7th! It's going to be an exciting fall around here for sure.

Re: Kansas 09
I plan to go up with some friends the second weekend and then we go up thanksgiving week to visit family. After that it is usually once in Dec. and one or two times in January.
