Hunt Vests?

Post by reba » Tue Aug 11, 2009 10:59 am

Well it's time for a new Hunting Vest.

I need something that will carry a load in comfort for 3 to 6 hours (lots of water for two dogs and myself, six chukar, lunch, jacket, a box of shells, camera, GPS, first aid, Tri-Tronics, etc).

I have been looking at the strap vest such as the Quilomene.

My concern would be if anyone finds the strap interfering with mounting the gun?

Thanks for any recommendations.

That is a long list of stuff to carry with you, maybe I do not carry enough stuff with me.

I have a cabela's vest, the ultimate field dog system. It has tons of pockets. A large game pack, with water bladder inside (i water my dog out of it), a second pocket of the back for your first aid kit, and plenty of room up front, with a special spot for the ecollar control. I think that it will have plenty of room for you.

Also check out the Mother strap vests. I have one and really like it, although I don't know if it will handle everything on your list. As far as mounting the gun, never had a problem.

I currently have one generation before the "ultimate field dog system"

I am familar with Mother strap vest. I had the first generation single strap; which was on the offside so no problem with gun mounting. This model did not sell and for me it does not have enough storge. I chukar hunt and a "chukar march" can be a long, long ways and even some of my quail can go 6 miles and 6 hours.

The idea of the Quilomene strap vest is to take the weigh off the shoulders onto the waist as some packs do. I am just concidering all the angles.

Please keep you opinions and knowledge flowing.

Similar to what I carry, but I need room for just 1 chukar but 6 boxes of shells.... :D

I like to wear a Filson belt for water and shells - heavier stuff. I find I like the weight around my waist - less work on the back. But I am middle-aged and 30 lbs overweight!

Gar-dog,

I have to admit I carry at least 2 boxes of shells when chukar hunting.

I personally use the Wing Works vest for hunting chukar and love it.
Lot's of storage space, very well built, and has a wide waist belt that allows you to transfer the weight from your shoulders to your legs/hips.
It was designed by chukar hunters in Idaho with our needs in mind.

You should check them out:

You won't be disappointed. The guy will custom fit it based on the measurements you supply and it will last a lifetime.
I got the blaze orange style so I don't get shot in the grouse woods, and so they'll be able to find me when I roll down one of the chukar mountains I hunt :)
