that's quite ok Chip- catch you up there or down here- I figure to get a couple limits in my back yard
sjk- looked at your web- nice-
figured when I get over your way I'll drop in for a coffee and talk
figure you've got a good dog to work your pup with- how old- I like to work a youngster with an experienced one and even into the first season
but also not one with other hunters-

Re: Going To Kansas?
yea thats the outfitter i guide for website. its not much of a lodge its a double wide trailer but its a nice one at that. i would love to have and its a place to lay down after a good days hunt. i usually go down there a couple of weekends out the year to just deer hunt a bird hunt. those setters in the pictures are my bosses coon dogs or thats what i tell them they are. i got short hairs but my female is a pretty good dog has a good little nose on her. but with her incident with the gun last year. i wouldn't feel comfortable hunting her with a group. maybe me and another person and only shoot birds she sees or points. but i am going to go pick up a 5 month old pup today at 4 . and i should have him ready to go or at least be able to shoot over him in 5 or 6 weeks. so i might not have any dogs to use with a group until then. but when you guys get down here let me know and if everything work out where i can get on our lease ground we can hunt that but i know of a few walk in areas around here that always has birds on it and theres one that i have to use my gps just to find thats out in the middle of no where haha.

Re: Going To Kansas?
We were just in South East Nebraska for opening weekend, around Dorchester. We had a good weekend seen tons of birds. Only downfall was the crops were still in the fields so that made it a little difficult. But it was fun.
Living in North East Kansas we have been seeing lots of birds around here too. Out for an hour run and the dogs pinning down 5 within the first 20 mins is pretty amazing. I don't think there is a "shortage" or declining population. You just gotta know where to look and be willing to work you but off for them cuz they are not going to come easy any more.

Re: Going To Kansas?
Yeah around here there isn't much walk in hunting. Really have to work to find a place, build relationships with the land owners, and earn the respect to continue to hunt year after year. We are lucky that we have a large family both in SE nebraska and NE kansas with lots of land with lots of birds.

I hunted Burlingame, Scranton, Overbrook for 25 years- private farms- not a problem finding 6-8 coveys every outing- until the turkeys took over-
had a private farm 2,300 acreas north of Atchison I hunted those years

We mostly stay around Centralia. And make a few trips out to western KS around Glen Elder. We can go right out our back door and find quail, pheasant, fox, coyote everything imaginable (even if we don't want them there). When we go up to Nebraska we go around Dorchester and Wilber.

Re: Going To Kansas?
thanks- what's interesting is that some mornings they are in there and some they aren't
he was out there aways- walked in facing him watching the eyes- never blinked- knew we had one- was hoping for a rooster and brother to get it-
getting close to season- reaction was to swing the gun- came up close cackling
youth season opens tomorrow- think a father and son are going to hunt the 1/2 mile- might sit in a lawn chair with binocs and watch

It is too bad you didn't post this last year, I ended up going alone after not being able to find someone to hunt with on the opener.bigbuddybretz wrote:Just thought i would shot u guys alittle update.
