My First Trip to SD.

Post by dugger13 » Thu Oct 22, 2009 8:12 am

I finally did it. I went out to SD to hunt Pheasants. I had a blast. We ended up shooting 65 birds in 3 days. There was 10 in the hunting party. We did the traditional "line up and drive" style of hunting. Something i did not want to do, but it ended up very fun.

My dogs did good. Each of them have never had a Pheasant in their mouth before this trip. The first day we had no productive points. My dogs could not figure out the runners. I did end up shooting 1 rooster, and my older dog did a nice track and retrieve on it. Probably 100 yards. That ended up being the first rooster of the hunt.

The 2nd day, both dogs were working good, and starting to point, come off their points, track, and re-establish points. It was fun to see.
By the 3rd day, everything was clicking. My little 5 month old GWP had a blast. I have some high hopes for him.

All in all, it was a great time. Dogs had fun, i definitely want to go back again.

The fuzzy face dog is sure fun to watch. He is probably my best hunting dog yet. While we were pushing one part of the field, he took off on a scent trail. Went about 400 yards out of the way. I was pretty torn on this trip. Normally i let my dogs run as far as they want and don't talk to them. But with 10 people around, and dogs busting roosters, i was trying instead to keep them close. Anyway, Ruger takes off, and goes on point. I didn't know what to do so i left him there, we finished the drive. His beeper collar is going off. We swung the drive line around. 18 minutes later the dog is still on point, we flush the rooster and kill the bird. Probably the highlight of my trip.
