The Real Deal

Post by MJK » Mon Nov 14, 2005 12:15 pm

I was originally going to post something about the beautiful pictures of the dog that birddog posted in the Wisconsin pheasant thread but I changed my mind. It's not that the pictures don't deserve it, they do, but I wanted to say something more. I wanted to say thank you to the person behind those pictures.
For those who don't know her, birddog's name is Janet. I have known her for close to 10 years and we have hunted together in many places for many birds in that time. As you might imagine I have hunted over many of her dogs. I also have been fortunate enough to have owned two, one who still hunts for me. The pictures she posts here, while being awesome, are not out of the ordinary for one of her dogs. She lives, breathes, eats and sleeps hunting dogs and it shows in what she produces. They are all great. They all take your breath away when you hunt behind them. I know this firsthand. The pictures below are from a grouse hunt we went on a few years ago behind what I consider to be the best grouse dog ever and naturally she's one of Jan's.

That point in the grouse woods is just another day at the office for one of Jan's dogs. But it's a heartstopper for me. Thank you Jan for putting into those dogs what you do. Thanks for giving me moments like that over the years with both your dogs and the ones I've gotten from you. Thanks for the things you have taught me that I wouldn't have known otherwise. When it comes to hunting with dogs, Janet is the real deal!

P.S. At the risk of this sounding like some kind of advertisement I assure you it is not. She certainly doesn't need it, and in fact Jan will probably clobber me for posting a pic of her dog without asking first when she sees this. What I said was from the heart and I just wanted to say it where people who appreciate dogs would read it.

I too have had the pleasure of hunting with Janet, and in fact have a new puppy from her as well. This past Friday I went hunting with
"Famous Janet" (my new nickname for her) and we each limited out on pheasants.

Each bird pointed, flushed by the hunter and retrieved. One retrieve was on a broken winged rooster that practically ran into the next county. As the famous basketball coach Larry Brown said after he one a world championship, "we did it the right way".

For me this was a preview of what I have to look forward to when my pup is ready to hit the field full time.

How do you swing a shotgun with all those trees in the way? :D
I always love seeing the grouse hunting pictures because it is so different of country then the treeless deserts I hunt chukars in.

That's what makes grouse hunting so frustrating and fun at the same time. What's even more frustrating is that even if the bird is handled perfectly by the dog, I find most of the time I don't even get an opportunity for a shot. There always seems to be a tree in the way! Makes it tough to reward a young dog for a job well done when you only get to shoot at half the birds pointed... if your lucky.

Sorry to have missed these posts but I was away for a few days hunting deer.

You can't. It's really more of a snapshot with a lot of hearing coming into play also. If you ever hunt with a veteran grouse hunter you"ll find they're rarely the last ones to shoot.

Here's some more birds you probably don't see much of in your part of the country. And yes, they're wild birds.

Nope none of those around here.
How close do you want a dog to work in that cover?

MJK

Post by MJK » Mon Nov 21, 2005 7:07 pm

If you look at the last picture I posted you can see a collar with a bell on it laying in front of the kennel on the left. As long as you can hear the bell the distance is fine. How far you can hear the bell will vary with conditions and cover. Around opening day the leaves are all still on and visibility is usually less than 20 yards, often less than 10 yards. Put some wind in those leaves and you won't hear much of anything past 50 yards away. Very tough hunting and shooting. The cover can be so thick that you have to back up and sidestep a few yards to keep moving foward. Under those conditions a far ranging dog won't be much good. An electronic beeper collar would undoubtably help but I haven't gotten around to getting one. As the season progresses the cover thins out and visibility increases substantially. The dog can work farther out then and still be hunting "for the gun" so to speak. Still, grouse are spooky birds and it takes a skilled dog to handle them. That first picture is a dog named Elke and she is the best in the business as far as I'm concerned. She has a keen sense of just how to handle grouse, something few dogs ever master from what I've seen. I always enjoyed hunting grouse with Jan and Elke.
From a shooting standpoint I can't think of anything tougher than early season ruffs. Open chokes and snapshots are the norm and as many times as not you are surprised when the dog retrieves a bird you had no idea you were able to hit. A fast shot at a disappearing through the leaves brownish blur are all you usually get to do. I've shot many innocent tree trunks and grouse seem to get a lot of trees between you and them. Arghhhh.....now you've gotten me going. I'm going to have to call Janet, I seem to remember her mentioning another good spot.......... :D

Those are woodcock and a grouse too. They are often a mixed bag in the woods of Wisconsin. Although I have heard there are some wild quail in Wisconsin I have never seen them. There is also an area of the state that has Sharptail Grouse. I am from Illinois and I have seen wild quail a number of times in Illinois. I also hunt wild pheasant in Wisconsin, Illinois and usually Iowa each year. The picture below was taken November 11th and is a wild Wisconsin pheasant taken on a farm near Elkhorn. I also hunt wild roosters on a friends CRP property near Stoughton, Wisconsin. The dog is my GWP which I got some 8 years ago from Mason Creek Kennels and is one of the few purchases in my life which exceeded all my expectations.

Image

This was taken November 7th outside of Tama, Iowa. Very warm that week. I have also spent some time hunting near LeMars in years past. What part of Iowa do you hunt?

Image

Oh yes, about the woodcock, personally I can't stand them as they taste like liver which I don't care for. I have a friend who loves them but he also likes liver. There's no accounting for taste I guess.

LaMars always gets me into an ice cream sorta mood :) I live south of there outside of crescent, I have been hunting around Oakland IA on a farmer friends land. The week after the opener I went out on monday with a cousin of mine, we got 5 roosters in 2.5 hours, saw quail but my cousin missed, I didnt have a shot.

I also have access to land north of me outside of Earling, some may remember that this was the place the Exorcist was written about, Anyway, My friends family lives there and they all farm :) so I will be busy, lots of birds and deer there.

I lived in Ill for 3 years in 1969-1972, outside of chi town. No hunting then, the lake was polluted etc.

Let me know when you get out to iowa next and maybe we can walk some land together and marvell at the way the dogs work. It never stops amazing me what a great dog can do.

Ah yes, Blue Bunny Ice Cream. Can't miss that when in LeMars. Thanks for the invite. It's getting pretty late in the year and I've still got a few places I need to hit around here but be careful what you offer, someone may just show up on your doorstep!

I would have welcomed it this last weekend, couldnt get anyone to go out so I went out back of my place for a few hours. We pointed up many roosters and one covey of quail but due to the close proximity of the houses I did not do any shooting. The birds seem to get used to being pointed up and flushed, they didnt seem to be in any hurry to fly away, only went 50 or so yards and set back in.

I hope they dont become too tame. Maybe a .22 blank every once in awhile to stimulate their flight? Anyone else see this?

I used to shoot them until 3 new houses went in, they dont like the shooting and complain now :( sadly... might have to move farther out to get away from the city folk.

For Janet, the invite is still good for an Iowa hunt, early deer is over so I will get out this weekend for some bird action.

I would like nothing better. However, I'm schuduled for surgery tomorrow morning. Might not get another chance to hunt this year, but if the invite is still open for next year I will be there with bells on.

MJK, I want to say our pheasant hunt last week was great. Our dogs did a beautiful job of finding birds under the circumstances.
Maybe you and I could head up to Iowa next season and give Markj a look at some wirehairs at work. :)

Take care all. If all goes well I will be talking to you soon.

Mark how is the bird hunting looking to be? I heard that you had heavy snow and about 6+" on the ground.

Let me know how it is as I am going to be hunting down there at least once more before the end of the year.

Rob

Just got another 2 or 3 in last night. I am going out tomorrow :) and hunt before the second season shotgun deer opens saturday. I try to stay out of the fields when deer hunting is on. Had a guy die last weekend and several shot accidentally. Hunter safety courses are in order as 2 guys shot themselves...

Last time out we got 5 roosters in 2.5 hours. Hope to do the same tomorrow. Sunday we will be up in northeast Nebr looking for birds. I see more in Iowa right outside my back door than i have seen in nebr this year. Cant shoot around my place anymore, city yuppies have put a stop to that :( that have moved out to our area and put a modular on an acre, cant shoot within 200 yards without permission which they refuse to give..
