WARNING DEAD COYOTE PIC

Post by ACooper » Wed Jan 13, 2010 9:15 am

Nothing like walking out to the pasture behind the house and getting a shot at a yote, he was about 160-170 yds. Weighed 33lbs so about average size male for around here.

It's ironic that you're wearing a shirt that says Coyotes as well....

BD isn't that how its supposed to work? If not I spent way to much money on shirts with pheasants and quail on them. ha

BTW since I received a PM saying I was "kinda sick" for being "proud" of shooting a coyote... I am proud this is the first one that I called in with a mouth call. Further coyotes cause numerous problems here on my place with calves and lambs etc. I will not apologize for attempting to control the predator population.

Not only will you not, but you should not apologize, you have every right to be proud of your Yote!!! :D Thanks for sharing it with us. I get so sick of these people who base everything on emotions and don't have a clue as to what they are talking about.

BTW, it must be a real thrill, calling one in. Congrats!!!!!!!!

Good job, Andy! There are way too many of them around anyway. When I was little, I remember my dad helping me shoot a coyote when we lived on our farm in Iowa. I'd like to do that again sometime.

Andy,

What is your tool of choice for taking coyotes?

Back in November, a Falconry association was holding a national meet in western OK and were having quite a bit of difficulty finding game to hunt with their birds. Seems there has been a coyote population explosion that is blamed for reduced numbers. They do take a toll on game birds and other small game.
Only thing worse than a bad dog is no dog at all...

Good job. Up here they are devistating the deer heards in Northern Maine along with the bears. The deep snows make it easy for the coyotes to kill full grown deer and then in the spring they get the fawns. Even the grouse suffer losses of their chicks.
And by the way you gave all fair warning of what is in the post so they can go pound sand. They don't need to look.

I will be getting set up for some hunts this winter, myself.
Keep up the good work.

don't let the antis bother you- neighbor and I used to call coyotes in quite a bit- farmers liked it-

the other day I watched a truck with a trailer full of dogs with their heads sticking out- coyote dogs- same type person that pm'd you would scream to the world when they watched those dogs- I picked up the Britt's and called it a day

I had a coyote den right on the roadside here- could see it from the picture window- got a couple with the 22

Ruff after I got the PM I did change the title that way there would be no doubt, and if someone doesnt want to look at it then they can choose not to. I was a little surprised to get the PM on this board though. I guess I shouldn't have been considering the mix of people here.

This one was taken with a Ruger # 1 in a .223.

When my dad/brother first started hunting coyotes with dogs there were a couple of people who wouldn't let them run on their property.."they are part of nature and don't hurt anything...they're so beautiful etc.." A couple of them quickly changed their minds when they witnessed their small family dog being carried off by one. I'm surprised someone on the board, presumably here because they hunt/test, has an issue with killing something, especially since there is pics of dead birds all over the sight ....whatever. Kill them and have fun doing it!

wonder what that person would think of this
one time we had a racket in the garage- cornered young rabbit- so I caught it

said heck- this could work for a coyote- ran a nylon 1/8inch rope 40' to a fence- the end over the top and tied to the rabbits back leg- sat in front of a tree- every now and then I'd pull on that rope- lift the rabbit just a bit off the ground- talk about a varmint call

Good job! The only good yote is a dead one. :D We had to shoot one right in our yard a couple weeks ago, came right up to us in broad daylight, middle of the day, brazen son of a gun. I've got a small son, a small Brit and a litter of pups on the way, I can't have them around.

makes me smile- I caught a stray cat in a leg hold trap once- just sat there till I tried to release it- yikes

had a family of coyotes right close here- worried about the pups I had- one evening heard them howling (coyotes) got out with the 22 not to far from the den- soon as I ripped off 11 shots- hitting and dropping two- they took off- I watched the den and checked- they abondened the den- smart critters

WTG! I have never coyote hunted and probably never will but I sure DO NOT have a problem with others doing it. I also would not have a problem shooting one if it presented it self when I was out hunting! We were out deer hunting yesterday and the spot that was full of deer 2 weeks ago had very few fresh tracks and those had coyote tracks over them

My brother inlaw hunts them with greyhounds. Has caught 45 so far this winter... well on his way to beat the 66 he caught last winter. Farmers and ranchers call him often to have him come and run their property.

It is very interesting to me that so many here take the" KILL EM ALL" stance concerning coyotes. When really the best thing to do is MANAGE them. Coyotes help control varmit populations more than any of us on here and have a place in the food chain. They can be a pain, but are put here to do a job. Dont get me wrong either, I do my part every year in "managing" the numbers round my parts!

I'm not into having them all killed- when a family had the den where I could see it and they would come thru the yard I thought the rabbit problem would go away

pretty neet to watch them skirt the burr field

bowhunting I'd see a pair hunt by- liked it- also saw two chase a doe around and arround

it's when a farmer is really upset with them I'll try to help out

that's why I'm giving the name and place for scout to go after them
there's a rise I used to set up on with my .243 winchester

short story;
my neighbor and I used to go set up and call them- one farmer said we should walk with the cattle as a pair kept pretty close-
darn cattle followed us right to the fence
we set some stuff down and proceeded to go over the high bar wire fence
I'm over it reaching for his gun-
he whispers- geese look at that
2 coyotes are sitting 50 yards away
I whisper back- think we can get em both- we raise up the guns- 1,2 3 fire- got them both- farmer was happy-
got the picture-

It may have to do with what part of the country a person lives. Where I live, there were zero yotes up until 40 or 45 years ago, and we did just fine without them. When they first started appearing, it was sort of exciting and a novelty to see one. But now they are nothing but a nuicance and I see alot of negatives and no benefits, compared to when there were none. Personally, at least where I live, rather than manage them, I would like to see them gone. JMO.

No need to kill them all, they keep coons and possums in check. But they also kill a BUNCH of fawns every year. I agree that we just need to keep them thinned a little.

Yes, it is part of the natural prey/predator cycle that a certain number of deer are killed & eaten by coyotes. It's not just fawns but sick/injured adults as well. Around here they keep the deer, wild pig, possum, coons, mice, squirrels, rabbits, and armadillos in check. BTW, they also eat insects, fruits, berries, birds, frogs, snakes, plants, and seeds.

They have a place in the food chain, just like everything else.

I understand the concept of management and a place in the food chain. The problem is management is not working in our state. The numbers seem to continue to increase. We also have a big number of raccoons and possums. The only numbers that decrease is small game, such as wild birds and cottontail rabbits. Don't they have a place also? As I said before, there use to be no coyotes here and I think we were better off. Again, JMO.

"There use [sic] to be no coyotes here" THAT YOU COULD SEE. Do you think they just suddenly materialized, or were imported by someone into your area? You are only now seeing them because their habitat is being reduced, otherwise you wouldn't see them at all.

We also have a big number of raccoons and possums. The only numbers that decrease is small game, such as wild birds and cottontail rabbits. Don't they have a place also? As I said before, there use to be no coyotes here and I think we were better off. Again, JMO.

"The use [sic] to be no coyotes here" THAT YOU COULD SEE. Do you think they just suddenly materialized, or were imported by someone into your area? You are only now seeing them because their habitat is being reduced, otherwise you wouldn't see them at all.
There were no coyotes in this state until 40 or so years ago!!!!!

Charlie, with all due respect, from where are you getting your information? You may want to take a look here: http://dnr.state.il.us/ORC/Wildlife/fur ... coyote.htm
http://www.inhs.illinois.edu/inhsreport ... oyote.html

Basically, coyotes were in IL (and elsewhere in North America) long before you were.

When I saw my first coyote, people laughed at me. I can tell you, coyotes were not in my part of the state, during my childhood and until I was in my 20's. Also, wild turkeys were unheard of and deer were very rare. The info that you posted stated that the coyote was rare for years, so maybe there was one from time to time, but I had never heard of it. As far as before I was borne, I have no idea what was here.
