East wind

Post by jfreeman GSP » Wed Nov 10, 2010 11:38 pm

Since I am kinda new at hunting behind a dog, I would like to know some opinions on hunting on an East wind. I have been told by longtime dog hunters and
read on one of the fourms that an East wind is not good, I can understand if the fish don't bite but where can quail, pheasnts, and grouse go on
an East wind, I wouldn't think they quit putting off scent just because the wind is from the East. The long time sharptail hunters I met in the sand hills
of Nebraska didn't have an explaination just said it was no good on an East wind.

Next thing they'll tell you is "here's your bag and stick ... we'll drive the snipe right to ya. Honest."

East wind, west wind, go hunting and have some fun.

I too have heard for years and from many old timers that scenting conditions with an east wind are inferior to all other directions. Not sure there is any truth so perhaps this is a possible episode for the 'Myth Busters'. An east wind has never detered me from bird hunting.

While at the GSPCA OGD CH last month, which I rode every brace of. We talked about that. There defiantly was a difference in the number of birds found when there was a east wind. I had heard something about the barometric pressure, whether a low or high, would cause scent to either be pulled up and out of dogs scent cone, or vice versa. During the Ch. it could have been just the dogs in that brace, or any number of factors. Time of day, temp. But there was a pattern of less birds with a east wind.
Any meteorologist that could explain this pattern?

Gentlemen,
I will tell you this, Grouse are spooky with any kind of bigger wind, and it does not matter from which way it comes.
