Quail in TX?
From pre season reports, I heard central and deep south TX is where the quail are up in numbers. That the usual strong hold of Abilene and the panhandle areas are down this year.
What have you guys seen so far in TX?
Are any of the state wildlife areas showing and number of birds?

Hi-Tailyn,
The man you probably want to talk to is my buddy Don Moody, he has a Texas Quail lease and is usually up on the Texas Quail population.
You can find him over on the SSBB, his handle is Ole Cowboy. Send him a private message and tell him I recommended you talk with him.

I just got back from TX last week, off of Hwy 82 near Guthrie. More birds than last year, but still numbers still seem to be down. The best hunt I had was 5 coveys in 2.5 hours with the young dogs.

It's spotty with some areas really good and others below average. A little birdy told me of a hundred bird covey busted this past weekend. I'm not sure if I believe a hundred, but half that and I'd still be excited. Good luck.

Whats the weather been like down there Redfish? I live about 100 miles north of you and this darn wind has been a real buzz killer when it comes to quail hunting. Still seeing decent numbers on nice days but days without wind have been few and far between the last couple of weeks.

Re: Quail in TX?
It's been too hot on the weekends. It seems like Tuesday and Wednesday are always the best days to hunt. I've found a few coveys in this hot weather but I've been calling it quits early. Went to KS twice for some colder weather and managed some pheasants over nice points. Pheasant hunting in Texas this weekend with some friends though I'd rather hunt quail by myself. Gotta be a little social I guess. I need to figure out a way to hunt for a living this whole work thing gets in the way of my playing.

I went and hunted Cottle Co. for 3 days 2 weeks ago, we found 3 coveys. Places that have always held coveys came up empty. Very hard hunting and the vegatation is very high which is great for the birds but not for the dogs. It was also 75 degrees all weekend which was a killer.
