What Is Your Dream Upland Hunt?

Post by Chukar12 » Fri Dec 10, 2010 11:55 am

If you could choose a week of hunting outside what you normally do, what would it be? I hunt Chukar, Huns, Valley Quali and Mountain Quail almost exclusively with a pheasant hunt or two thrown in once a year. I wouldn't trade any of it...but given endless time and money...

I would go to the pine forests of the south for gentleman Bob and run my big dogs off of horseback with a dog wagon following. Spend an evening with arterie clogging southern fare and bourbon, brandy and cigars.

My second choice would be an Eastern Grouse hunt in the fall colors with my gray faced old girl .. shoot a grouse or two and enjoy a little history...

you?

That is easy for us here in MO. this year. Our dream hunt is one where the birds show up.

1st would be An open prairie with the chance of a mixed bag
2nd the north woods on grouse and woodcock
3rd would be down south on bobwhites
and 4th (only cause I'm out of shape at the moment) would be chuckars in the high country
all of these i would do on foot with my dogs just to see how we held up and a guy with local knowledge to help guide us in the right direction. (wink wink hint hint to anyone who fits in to my 4 dreams)

My dream hunt would be either a driven hunt for pheasants in the UK with my lab, or to go on a plantation quail hunt with pointers and flushers working together.

I would love to get past the 22+ hour drive barrier I have that would find me out in Montana chasin some Huns and Sharpies w/my bunch. Same thing for the Southwest Quail species. All of which are my upland bucket list, of course.

Mine wouldn't really be about the location or quarry. It would be with people that I no longer get to see physically. A hunt anywhere with my father and my old white faced Britt. I day dream about it. My Dad was a New Englander, and he loved Ruffed grouse. A Maine grouse hunt with a dinner in an old lobster restaurant, with a good bottle of wine. Man, I miss my father. If yours is still with us, go hunting as much as possible.

An upland season of traveling the country with my father, my mutt and his soon to be puppy. Hunting all species of upland birds, enjoying nature, meeting new people, watching the dogs work, drinking and eating good! The most important part of the equation being my father, I cherish every second I get to spend with him and feel honored and proud to do so.

For me, Idaho to go after all the grouse species there, I think there are six? Then a wild chuckar hunt. But always consider myself blessed to be able to hunt Ruffs here in Maine from Oct. to Dec. 31. I did pheasant hunting in KA and found it boring and too quickly done. But working couple coveys of wild quail with a buddy and two dogs was fun. An Arkansa duck hunt would be fun.

Bobs on a plantation in Georgia with Ted Nugent

Mearns or Gambels on the AZ/Mexico border with Randy Lack

Huns and Sharpies in Montana with Ben O. Williams

Well you did say dream hunts. The hunting partners are optional but I would really like to hunt those species of birds in those places.

Goin' back to the homeland. I'm from Grand Rapids, MN, and I can't wait to get back and chase the ruffs again. With my new GSP. And my brothers. Not necessarily in that order, but probably. Maybe in 2 years. This past year hunting in the NW has been pretty great though. I can dump phezz, huns, cali quail, and duck all in the same day.
The best place to hunt is where the birds are. Next best is where they ain't. Anywhere else works too.

It is funny that you mention Ted Nugent. I actually guided him on a turkey hunt in S.E. Kansas in 2000. I also guided Bud Grant that same year. (Bud is the retired coach of the Minnesota Vikings, and the only man in the pro football and basketball hall of fame.) Both were very nice. Ted is much more calm in person. He really just blended in with the hunting camp. He did bust out the guitar one night for about a half of an hour. He killed his 2 gobblers, and was happy. One with a bow. :D

My dream hunt currently is my first hunt - I have yet to be on one. My second dream hunt is my first hunt with my first gun dog - I dont have a dog yet.

I feel that in some ways, I am lucky, every hunt from here on out will be a dream hunt!

will1235: get home safe. Take care...

proudag08: great attitude! I hope you get out soon.

My most realistic dream hunt is to head down to eastern KY to hunt grouse and quail with my oldest friend and our 16 gauges. My retirement bucket list (will be here sooner than one thinks) has VT grouse with a friend, MN grouse and all the other usual places/birds. Going to hit as many of them as I can.

Hmmm.....I think hunting grouse and woodcock somewhere would be up there. Just because i have never done it....
After that on the prairies for sharptails with huns mixed in would be nice.

Any of you that have chukars on the list just need to get to oregon, i can help with that

Chukar12,
I live in Gods Country, Potter/Tioga County Pa, we hunt spooky Thunderking here every season and you are welcome to come out this way, stay at our place
in October when the leaves are changing, bring you dog, and walk thru our beautiful Grouse mountains, we will treat you to one of your treasured hunts, several in fact.
I get to live where other people only dream about, we have Deer, Bear, Trout, Turkey and Grouse all in my back yard. My Dream hunt is right outside the front door of my log cabin, try to make it out here sometime.

Come on out sometime. I can get you into sharptails, sage, ruffs and blues within an hour or two of Idaho Falls. Spruce grouse and chukars are a little farther north.

It would be fun to hunt with a fellow "New Anglanda" again.

My dream hunt would be to hunt bobs in the southeast or Mearns, scales and gambels in the southwest.

Hambone,
Got to admit there are two or three other places I would like to go again, Scotland to do some walk up Red Grouse hunting and Jim up in Alaska has me thinking about a Copter ride into hunt Ptarms again. There are some hunts you just never forget no matter how good you have it at home, Course the Libby Camps are not bad either.
