Wild Phes in Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio

Post by Meatballs » Wed Dec 29, 2010 7:55 am

I just moved from Rapid City South Dakota a year ago. Made a trip back and it refreshed me a bit from not hunting birds nearly every weekend. We moved to Kentucky. Plenty of preserves with decent birds here but i am soliciting some information regarding public or private land opps for hunting wild phes in IN, IL, and Ohio since all are very close to me and a much shorter drive than SD. Appreciate any help. Matt

here in Illinois we really don't have public land like other states do out west, mostly private land and hunt clubs were they release birds.

Wild phez in Indiana are hard to come by. I used to go with a buddy of mine up to a private farm in Remington IN, and we would kill a few Phez but its no SD.
You really got to get to the northern end of the state to get into wild birds. Now wild quail is a different story, the quail numbers seem to be coming back over the last couple of years in the south western portion of the state.

Pheasant numbers are better from the central to northern regions, but even then the numbers are low, grounds hard to come by and the 8 inches of crusted snow and ice make it difficult.

There are a few wild pheasant in Ohio...most will be found on private ground participating in the CRP/CREP programs.
I reckon one could find a list from that end and begin to ask....but it may be simpler to marry into access.
You will be better off heading into the setting sun.
