Woodcock Louisiana

Post by northern cajun » Tue Jan 04, 2011 12:48 pm

It is flat full of woodcock down here in the Bayou state best year in at least 7.

I have only been back a couple of days but it is flat full of birds down here. My brother took out my dog with a couple of friends and they tore them up, think the dog may have converted some lab people into shorthair people :D :D Just joking lab people.

He never hunted her before either. I told him to take a camera next time.

The quotes from one of the hunters goes like this

" You told me she could do it, but you didn't tell me how she would do it, that is the most fun I have ever had hunting."

On several occasions, my brother tapped her to release her to fetch she never moved he said "boys they got some more birds get ready" they knocked down 5 on one point over her and 4 birds three other times.

I wont even tell how many birds they/I have moved no one would believe me.

Needless to say I have a lot more coverts just opened up to me.

A trained dog is a wonderful thing.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!

I'm with you Frank. We went again yesterday and had 3 limits in less than an hour. Had 4 bunched together on 1 point. Moved at least 20 birds. Let me know if you want to get together one day. Your place or mine!

Where in LA?

Not trying to steal your spots, just general area. I lived north of Shreveport as a teen and didn't know any bird hunters. Other than waterfowl. (I grew up in a non hunting house)
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

I am in Lake Charles. Northern Cajun is just outside Lafayette.

LOL! The gators and cottonmouths are taking their long winter's nap! Had a great day of hunting today. We hit the duck blind and killed a limit of ducks and a canadian. Then we went straight to the woodock hole and killed 3 before I rolled the heck out of my ankle. I may be down for a few days!

Yes 90% of my hunting is south of I-10 Thats New Orleans to Baton Rouge to Lafayette to Lake Charles etc. And the woodcock hunting is unreal this year you wouldn't believe me. 3 years of wild bird work in one if I had to guess minimum.

Heard they are doing well there if you do go there are birds everywhere my deer hunting friends are moving birds all over. I havent been this year no need. There are birds everywhere. Try the leaves on the east side of the basin they usually hold a lot of birds along the borrow pits.

Quail I have 5 coveys by the house (5 mile radius). They can't take much pressure so just take a bird or two then leave them be. No really good quail hunting like the old days.

Very good season this year not as good as last but very good. I assume you hit Clear Creek and Fort Polk etc. We are in a long term drought so go to the swamp Atchafalaya Basin Indian Bayou holding a lot of birds this year.

How far you want to travel I can put you on some birds I am 2.5 hrs away. Breaux Bridge

Hollar I'll put you on some MrCreole on the board is just south of you and I know he is in birds as well.

Still have 5 days left don't give up.
