Flushers for chukar hunting.

Post by brule » Fri Jan 07, 2011 11:04 pm

Does anybody use a flushing dog for chukar hunting or is it primarily a pointing dog thing? I'd like to head out west and try for some next year, but have a flusher and not sure how well it'd work.

There was a post here awhile back were dirty steve was talking about guys hunting chuckar with labs and he had said they can do ok but it works better with a big running pointer to cover ground but its all about you having fun with your dog and if you wanted to give it a try why not you know.

I have a buddy who hunts chucks with a springer, he loves it. The dog should work close because when those chucks burts out they are gone quick. They hold very well in the late season so the pup can get real close, just make sure you know how to read your pup.

I have never done it personally, but i have seen enough pictures on local hunting board to know that you can. It actually usually develops into a huge heated arguement on the local board.....Having said that one of the local guys that probably kills as many chukars a year as anybody uses a golden retriever. So although it wouldn't be the way i would want to do it plenty of people here in oregon do.
In my mind the biggest myth in all of upland bird hunting is that you need a huge running dog to kill chukars....Just like in any other type of hunting the guys that are the most successful understand the habitat and know where the birds are going to be hanging out within reason, they put themselves and the dog into position to be successful and the dog does the rest.
