Had a great time at the local PF youth hunt. The kids were very excited to be out there with the dogs and harvesting birds, which were the first for many of them. Here are some pictures of our group, with my brittany Katie. The rest of the pictures are here https://picasaweb.google.com/emilyhachman/2011YouthHunt

@gittrdonebrits

She is a great looking dog, although I'm a bit partial! Here's her pedigree, I hope it's clear enough to read.

Well, I just discovered this cool tool to create the pedigree online that others here are using. Here's the link to Katie's pedigree http://www.perfectpedigrees.com/3genview.php?id=3485

A friend of mines son was at the hunt, shot his first bird. He said he was definitely in for opening weekend next year. Thanks for putting on hunts like this for kids.

Nice work. I help out with our chapter's youth hunt and the kids always have a great time. And I think the adults have just as good of a time introducing hunting to the kids. And I know the dogs love it.

Youth are the future of our sport. We all need to try to introduce young people to the outdoors. Good for you! :D

Good job and nice pics. Out of curiosity, does your chapter have a day of gun safety training for these kids before the shoot, or had all the kids handled firearms before? My husband and I were shooting sports instructors for 4-H, and know their safety requirements for shooting so was just wondering what PF's are.

Cheryl,

During this event the kids get some classroom style instruction on gun safety and also get to shoot trap before getting to the field. I believe that most of these kids had handled firearms prior to this event. When in the field the kids are allowed to carry their own gun, but there are two safety officers who handle the ammunition. Once a dog goes on point the safety officers will each take a kid and place them in a safe location, instruct them on their shooting lanes, and give them one shotgun shell. Once the bird is shot the guns are cleared and unused ammo is returned to the safety officer.

Hope this helps,
Nick

Thanks, Nick. I thought it looked like one adult per child. Looks like something I'd like to get involved with, since we don't do 4-H anymore.

Cheryl,

The chapter website is www.heartlandpf.com and Al Rohlfing would be a good one to visit with about joining up and helping. The chapter is very active and they participate in two youth hunts per year plus do a lot of habitat projects as well. They also do quite a bit of support of youth shooting sports events. They meet at the Bass Pro in Independence the first Thursday of the month.

Cheryl,

Regarding the one adult per child, the parents were invited into the field while the kids hunted so those are the other adults you see in the pictures.
