nice pic, I found one looking the same after a grouse took off last weekend. . .the wife had the camera with her for photos of the son at an Easter egg hunt. I learned not to mess with asking to take the camera when things like that are going on.

***NEWBIE ALERT***

I saw the picture before the forum changed, but what was I looking at?
Is this what grouse do to logs?

Male grouse sit on these logs in the spring and beat their wings in a cadence that increases in frequency. The wings cupped against the breast create a thump sound. The women grouse think it is cool, they come running, and the man grouse does a little dance for them, and then, well you know the rest.

If memory serves me correctly (I wish the picture would show up) the log looked like somebody had hacked at it with a hatchet or machete.
Can grouse really do that with their wings?

no, if there were hatchet marks someone else put them there. the drummer logs are usually big, round, mossy, old, and they may have grouse scat on them.

if you truly are new to grouse drumming, it is very interesting. the tonal frequency of the drum is quite low, and you can feel it as much as hear it.

when the female arrives, the male, spreads the ruffs at his neck and spreads his tail, and struts around.
