What birds do you like to hunt?
What birds do you like to hunt?
We have 3 birds in this area to hunt. BW Quail, Greater Prairie Chicken and Pheasants.
By far my favorite is Quail. There are a blast to hunt, and there are few birds better to break in a young dog.
The "Vest" is home made. He had a run in with some barbed wire, and after the stitches were out, he had not hair on his chest and down one leg.
My number 2 bird is Prairie Chicken, in the early PC season where they can be hunted with a dog.
Later in the season it is close to a waist of time to go after them with a dog. You can't get close to them
Then it is pheasants, we don't have a lot of them close by. But we get into some of the while quail hunting.
But I really want to get Ace into some new birds. Huns look like they would be fantastic, a lot like quail, only bigger

I agree with you on the first two. I guess it's just because my guy's handle them better. Love the pictures. In that first one, if you replaced the astro with a "black tie" you could take him to any formal "affair". Good looking dog

1. Pheasants
2. Pheasants
3. Pheasants
4. Huns
In that order, then a tie between Goose and Ducks. Its based on my location, not because I dislike other bird hunting. Would love to try that mountain chucker hunting while I'm still young enough to enjoy it.

Re: What birds do you like to hunt?
When I first moved to Idaho as a college student we had 4 species of quail, 3 species of forest grouse, 2 species of plains grouse, chukars, huns and good pheasant hunting. That was 40 years ago. We no longer can mountain quail, gambels and the sage grouse seasons may be a thing of the past in a few years and most of the pheasant hunting in this part of the state is put and take. All these birds were fun to hunt, but I think sharptails are my favorite. They are native to Idaho and there is just something about be out hunting what is considered a prairie bird with the Tetons as a backdrop.

That would be a big +1, on your first pick!

To piggy back onto Nike's
1. Pheasants
2. Pheasants
3. Quail bobs and blues
4. Ducks/geese
Though I have a feeling my list might change a little over the next few years as I will have opportunities to chase sharpies and huns, and hopefully chukar.

I always wanted to get after some early season chickens, I have only hunted them by pass shooting when we still had a season here in OK. Do you find them on Walk-in around Manhatten?SetterNut wrote:We have 3 birds in this area to hunt. BW Quail, Greater Prairie Chicken and Pheasants.

Re: What birds do you like to hunt?
Quail would be # 1 but we have very low numbers here in IL so I often don't shoot them just enjoy seeing a wild covey take off
Pheasant #2
Woodcock # 3 I can catch some in a few spots they are a nice bonus bird
then waterfowl for #4 Woddies are my favorite but any duck species and Geese are fun.

Not really, I hunted several wiha, I saw a couple of birds flying past into private ground, Ace pointed the only one I saw on the WIHA, and I shot it. ( the one in the picture)
I would say that I walked 20 miles for that one bird
But it is an effective weightloss program

Well I can use some of that as well. A friend in my navhda club goes out to western ks in the early season and has some luck on wiha land.SetterNut wrote: But it is an effective weightloss program

Re: What birds do you like to hunt?
We have pheasant, quail, chuckars and grouse out by me and I'd say quail are by far the best hunting. They offer a challenge to hunt because of their size and mobility. We also use them to train our young stock. They really help them develop their nose and hunting skill. Yet, I do have to admit hunting any upland bird is not only fun but worth our time and effort.

Re: What birds do you like to hunt?
Raised hunting quail so that is my number one, the only other birds I have ever shot are pheasant! Would love to try chucker and grouse someday. It will happen I hope.
Better add that I have shot a lot of water fowl but, figured you were asking for upland birds.

Re: What birds do you like to hunt?
1. Sharptail
2. Huns
3. Ruffies
4. Pheasant
The rest I have to travel for so they are infrequently hunted.
We could have lots of categories:
Hardest to shoot - Ruffies
Easiest overall - Pheasant
Easiest without a dog - Ruffies
Hardest for dogs - Sharptail (late season)
2. Huns
3. Ruffies

Re: What birds do you like to hunt?
My favorite birds to hunt are Ruffed grouse, followed by all the other birds I can use my dogs on (It's all about the dogs), but I like to hunt almost every game bird that flies. Goose hunting is especially addictive...

Re: What birds do you like to hunt?
Toss up between Grouse & Woodcock... cuz that's what we have here... Game Commission ditch chickens in Pa are all put & take... as likely to run as flush... drives the dog nuts. But I like to hunt anything I get the chance to! (Turkey Birds in the spring! )
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.
