Season opens when?

Post by SetterNut » Sun Jul 10, 2011 8:30 pm

This is a tough time of year. If it wasn't for watching my son play baseball, I think I would be bored stiff.

Really looking forward to birds season this year. It will be Ace's 3rd season, and he should be a very serviceable bird dog.

The first season that opens up around here is early season Prairie Chicken. Think it is Sept 15. I hunted them with a dog for the first time last year. It was fun to get Ace out after them, but the numbers of birds is not high. Would guess that we put in 20 miles for every PC that we got pointed and shot. Then the real bird season opens here in KS in November. Qauil is my favorite, but if a pheasant end up at the end of his nose, thats great too.

This is what I hope to see a lot of this fall

How long do you have to wait until you can get out after the birds with the dog?

Sept 1 is for sharptails in MT. I am planning to be there for a week or two. Looking to do some quail hunting at the end of the year and I have a spot lined up in southeast KS. Guy has a deer lease and says there are a lot of quail he is charging me to hunt. I am not sure about it yet how are the quail numbers in KS Looking. Also is anybody out in MT how do the sharptails look this year.

My guess is with all the water they had this year the habitat is great, but broods may not have come off until later. I'm headed through there in 2 wks on my way to my kids hockey camp in ND, I'll let you know what I find out.

August 15-ish for early goose here in Nodak! Before you ask, no, I will not be hunting them that early. I prefer NOT to get sunburned and eaten by bugs while waterfowling -- totally ruins the experience. Then again, if the temps drop and we get an early frost *fingers crossed* I may have to get out and give it a whirl. Last year I hunted the last week of August and did well, but there was that whole mosquito thing. Besides, five geese in the freezer from one hunt is enough to make a year's worth of jerky.
Other than that, our earliest bird season is dove, which opens Sept. 1.

Really seasons shouldnt limit your activity. Check out some trial organizations in the area. The walking trials start end of Sept. in Ks. and there are a couple of real good guys I could put you in touch with down in Manhattan. Would love to see you out at some! Who knows, you might enjoy it. I know your dog will.

Dove is September 1, we camp out every year. I'm thinking this year I'm gonna pass on dove hunting (not a fan of being still) and spending the time just working with the two dogs and being camp cook.

Quail here is Nov 15, but I'm thinking I'm gonna go to Arkansas the first weekend of November and open my season there.
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

Nope!

Buddy of mine lives in the national forest, and spends a lot of time hunting and fishing it, he's heard and seen two covies. I'd wanted to go camp there with the wife in October, figured push it back a few weeks and let the dogs hunt a bit.

I'm not sure about the sharptails or other upland birds, but if the 1000+ antelope that got killed this past winter on the highline is any indication, the bird population could be in trouble in Region 4,6 and norther portions of 5/7. It was a very tough winter in most of MT with lots of snow. I haven't seen anything from the MTFWP on birds, but they usually put out an article on the hunting outlook before the season's open up. Says "late summer" on their website. I suppose the hatch counts will give them a better idea. Check here later for more info when they post it. http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/planahunt/hun ... ebird.html
