Do you keep logs?

Post by MO_GSP » Thu Aug 04, 2011 11:19 am

I was thinking I'm going to have some free time this weekend and was going to make a spreadsheet to help keep track of my success this season. Things I was considering recording= weather conditions, time of day, birds encountered, etc. Do any of you do this? Maybe I'm just a nerd but thought it might help or at least be nice to look back at in the future. If you do something similar what exactly do you keep track of?

I keep a journal and I will right down all my good days and if the dog does something special or if something out of the ordinary happens with the weather...I'm a big weather geek. I also keep track or write down places I hunt and all places I scout.

yea i used to do a bowhunting journal when i was really into it, havent bowhunted in 5 or 6 yrs but my lil bro uses my old journals and has had more success than me, he has taken a 140" the last 3 yrs straight out of my old stands/hunting journal advice, anyway I thought I would start the same thing for bird season this year.

When I am out hunting I write down each place I hunt and where it is with directions on how to get back along with what I saw that day. I started this after I could not find a good spot I had been too. I am still searching for that spot.

I've kept and journal for over 30 years of bird hunting. Number and species taken, location, interesting things I've seen, hunting partners, weather and decoy sets when I'm waterfowl hunting.

I do keep a journal and note pretty much the things that have been already mentioned, including GPS, meals and other details.

I'm not sure if this is applicable but when we first got our pup 21 months ago we started to keep a log of her training ect. This past news years I decided to go viral and started a blog of our training and hunting adventures. Over the past 8 months its taken on a life of its own....where we hunt, how we train, the random funny things she does, dog treat recipes and lots of photos and video. It started small....

I never have before, but I've decided to start keeping two with these new pups.

One training and one hunting.
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

I keep notes for training so if I forget something about a specific dog I can look it up and go from there.

I keep a log in the form of an excel spreadsheet. I record where I hunt, how many hours (rounded to the nearest 15 minutes), distance walked (I record my track with a GPS), species of birds flushed, number/species of birds taken, and other notes such as who was with me, weather, where NOT to get a coffee, etc. I started doing this when I volunteered to participate in an upland hunting survey program in NJ and I used the form that the state biologist running the program sent me.

They have an app for that... I use a hunting app on my cell phone (Droid Operating system) that records all of that and more... I mostly use it for Grouse hunting, as pheasants are put/take here, and quail are more luck than anything where I hunt... I haven't had any problems with it thus far, and makes it nice to whip out right after a flush and record notes, it automatically records weather and location data when you input a note... Of course you have to have a smart phone for this, but it really is convenient!!!

I never have before, but looking back I wish I had. I will definitely keep a journal and some type of informational spread sheet starting this year! I'm excited already! :D

I keep a photo diary. Sort of like a Blog as stories of remarkable hunts are included, but it is for myself and family. It is just one continuous photo essay of my current dog's hunting and other adventures.

I just started keeping a journal at Christmas time last year. It isn't necessarily a log, but I enjoy writing tidbits down about my hunts.

I think it is just great to keep a journal, it will bring you back great memories about your hunts and your dog success over the years. I don't think it is nerdie at all :)

I have had one at camp for a few years, some times it gets misplaced, when I find it it reminds me of some great moments. Other like reading it as well. Hope it is still where I left it for this years hunts.

Thanks QuillGordon. I appreciate it. It's a ton of fun to do and I love getting to put other peoples pups on it as much as my own. :)

Okay guys, first of all, sorry it took so long. I finally got around to charging my Droid phone. The name of the app is just called hunting buddy. There are actually a couple of these type apps out there, just liked this one the best. Works great for grouse, deer, turkey, waterfowl, etc...
