I have been there twice and I have been to the U.P. once. I like Wisconsin better. I have hunted Price county area, but this year I am thinking about the Tomahawk area. The 2007 was a great trip, but the 2008 trip was ROUGH!

Bird numbers (according to DNR) are pretty consistent if not up from last year. Plenty of public/paper land to hunt!

From http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/har ... ldrum2.pdf
Statewide ruffed grouse population indices increased 38% between 2010 and 2011, based on the number of drumming grouse heard during roadside surveys. Changes in indices to breeding grouse populations varied by region, and the statewide mean number of drums/stop was suggestive of an increase (P= 0.06) from 2010 to 2011. Drummer densities on the Sandhill Wildlife Area in Wood County decreased 17%. The Stone Lake Experimental Area in Oneida County decreased 10% from 2010 levels.

I'll be up around Phillips and around Tomahawk throughout the Fall. Gotta get my pup on some ruffs.

You have some nice grouse cover just SE of you around Osseo and Augusta. MANY grouse trials r held in that area. Less wolves (for now) there too.

I am sure I will be heading up there this fall too. Not to many grouse down here to get my dog on. Heard the numbers are up this year also. We will see how the season turns out.

I get out quite a bit in these areas as well. It's just that the cabin is up in Price Co. Also, the area by Osseo Fairchild and Black River Falls is catching up with Price Co. in the wolf department. At least up north they have plenty of room to roam with the big woods reducing the chances of bumping into them. Not so much down here.

I have a little cabin way north in wisconsin. Can't wait for the season to start. Kind of nice living here and listening to everyone planning their trips right to my backyard. Makes me wonder why i go to south dakota every year for a week in october. I should just stay home. If anyone is looking for a cheap place to stay with some free guide advice, let me know.

heading back to Price county twice this fall. Late Sept and mid October and then off to south Dakota. I love northern Wisconsin. I stay at the Palmquist's Farm in Brantwood....10-15 miles northwest of Tomahawk on Hi-way 8. Only complaint is lack of cell coverage when hunting...safety issue.

If anyone is interested more than happy to help with spots to check out and or hunt together just pm me your plans we'll figure somethin out....

Any of you Wisconsinites grouse hunt the Northern Highland State forest? My brother in law has a cottage (note I did not say cabin) in the area and he's interested in giving grouse hunting a try.

Haven't been up in that area...That Forest you speak of is 225,000 acres :D Should be a few covies one could find.... I'd call any sporting goods businesses/baitshop/tavern in the nearest city to your brother-in law's cabin and ask around.....perhaps someone on this website ( http://www.lake-link.com )could give you a little direction in either the dog forum or upland forum....

Lots of public land, lots of clear cuts that are coming back. Need to put some moles on the truck to scope out some nice areas on a map and then its time to put the boots to the trail. We have hunted this area for 15+ yrs now. Our areas that we normally hunt are getting too big. This year will be our year to scout and find new areas. So much time is spent going from covert to covert each and every weekend that we need to expand our area and find new one to hunt.

Awesome. I'll have to check that area out sometime this fall. Last Christmas I gave my brother in law a hunting vest with the promise that I'll take him grouse hunting this fall. Sounds like that area may be a good option. Thanks for the help!

Anyone try to hunt grouse in the Devils Lake area. Opening is now just 16 days away and really do not want to go way up north. Hoping to find a place around Madtown to hunt grouse.

first spot of opener is already picked out and I can't wait to hit it right away in the morning. Don't get a whole lot of time to hunt till after thanksgiving but I'll take every minute I can close to home. :)

Folks if you are free, give the Chequamegon-Nicolet National forest a try. You will get plenty of dog work, and shooting. Michigan is also great too. Now gonna wait for a few weeks and head out to MN and SD for pheasants.
