Long vs short

My buddy and I got back from hunting sharpies this weekend north of town, great day. But I definitely learned the advantage of a long tailed mostly white dog when hunting in 3-4 foot sage, bitter and rabbit brush. I own a mostly white GSP with a short tail. It was hard to keep track of her and when she went on point, unless she was very close or in a clearing she was almost impossible to see. If she was a roan dog it would almost be perfect camo for this vegetation. My buddies ES however with that long, white, flag tail, straight up was always easy to find. I guess there is a reason beyond just style for a long tail. I also have question for you guys that hunt sharpies in the plains, Do you put a bell on your dogs? I've found that it spooks sharpies here.
