Sentry sharpies

Post by fishvik » Fri Oct 28, 2011 7:48 am

I was out hunting sharpies yesterday and I saw something I've never seen before. There were two sharpies perched in chokecherry bush on a low knoll. As I approached and got within 20 yds they flushed along with about 45 birds on the other side of the knoll. Anybody else ever seen perched sharpies acting as sentries?

Yes. I have seen it a couple of times. Saw one sitting on an aspen stump from the road in a new area that I was not familiar with. It was at a pretty high elevation. I stop and watched it for a few minutes, finally it took off and 30-40 more took off with it.

I've seen the same thing with sharpies on fences.

This year I haven't flushed more then one sharpie at a time.....glad someone is seeing some groups of birds. I've logged some pretty good miles too.

Good job.

When I was a kid we hunted them with the 22 by sneaking them. You needed to shoot the sentries dead and then you could get close to the birds on the ground and then you could get 4 or 5 from a flock. If you missed the sentries they flew and took the rest with them and you went home with nothing.

Have seen quite a few of them in olive trees during my trips to MT.
