Oklahoma pheasant opener...

Post by ACooper » Thu Dec 01, 2011 9:26 pm

Turned into a nice quail hunt. Went to a couple of my honey holes today were in past years we have had excellent luck on pheasants, these spots are not big at all but have excellent cover. We haven't even been out there this year to hunt the quail we figured we would just save them for the pheasant opener... Well we only saw a few pheasants today but moved 7 coveys of quail in about 2.5 hours. Shot a few could have been many more if we wanted. Dog work started off a little shaky which is not surprising since the dogs haven't had much chance to knock the rust off, but the dogs straightened up in a hurry and we had excellent dog work for the majority of the day.

A covey find by, Pete a pup we raised and is now owned by my cousin

7 coveys of quail in 2.5 hours would make me forget about those pheasants for a while.

What part of OK was that in? Not looking for your honey hole but trying to figure out if a OK non-resident license is worth the $$. My pup is no where newar ready to hunt but its looking like OK is going to be the most practical place for me to start looking for birds. We have everyting else in TX BUT good upland bird populations...

I would say that an out of state lic would be a waste of money and driving for the areas you are going to have access to. This spot is decent, but please don't mistake this as a representation of the OK bird population otherwise you will be severely disappointed.

I would have to agree with that!!!! Now if I could get a job where I wasn't getting home after dark every night maybe I could go hunt some birds too!

How big were the coveys? The ones I've found have been small. Glad you found some birds though.

Hi Coop, looked a cracking hunt mate.
Did you breed Pete, as he is a real looker and a stylish pointer of game.

Thanks Dave, yes he is one of our pups. He looks great but would benefit from a little more range.

I have hunt up in Turpin, OK for Pheasant. So this kinda bums me out, I also planned on hitting up the Beaver River WMA after the guided hunt....

Oh well, it will be my first pheasant hunt so i'll go anyway. One bird will make the trip. Also my first outing with my pup.

I'm gonna agree, I don't know where you hunted, but I have a guess... There are still birds here, but overall numbers are WAY down.
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...
