Passing the torch..............
Passing the torch..............
Not that I'm going anywhere any time soon, but after two years of shooting clays,
taking & passing his hunter safety course, and walking with me last year without
a gun to prove to me he was interested in hunting versus simply shooting.......
.......today, my oldest son Stephen joined Katy & I for a Woodcock & Grouse hunt.
We had the entire WMA to ourselves, moved some birds & had a blast.
The fire has officially been lit. Mission accomplished !!

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Today was my 12-year-old daughter Klaire's first day of hunting as well, after many years of tagging along with me to hunts, tests, and trials. The sharptails all flushed wild today, so we didn't get any shooting in, but we still had a great time following the dogs across the South Dakota prairie. Looking forward to hunting with her a lot in the future.

Re: Passing the torch..............
Thanks for the kind words fellas....... it was a good morning.
We only have resident Woodcock here right now- no flight birds yet.
We had one really nice point by Katy on a Woodcock, I was able to put
Stephen in position for a shot- but the bird flushed to the one area that
didn't allow a safe shot........
.....and Stephen didn't take the shot. He pulled up and said to me with confidence,
"wasn't a safe shot Dad." I just smiled and told him, "Good job, that's Woodcock hunting
for you."
He doesn't know how lucky he is to start out shooting 3/4 oz. loads from a 28ga. SxS !!

All the work was done by my son. I just opened the door, he had to walk through.Dave C wrote:Well done Rob on passing down your sport, sounds like you have done it the write way.

Stephen actually shoots the 28ga. better than me. I think the gun is set up better for him than me
(in my defense )

Nice job! He is lucky to have a dog to hunt behind. When I was younger my dad would send my older brother in the brush to flush birds and we would also retrieve them.
I have had my 7yo nephew help me pull weeds, do other yard work, help build my coup, and clean up the new place. He will be tagging along this year. My favorite thing is when he says "I want to work because men work".

Re: Passing the torch..............
You and I have very similar hunting experiences growing up My Dad would never miss the opportunity to joke about how he doesn't need a dog because he's already got two of them The dog jokes stopped once we got older and started carrying guns, but now he just pulls old man rank whenever there's a big cattail pushultracarry wrote:Nice job! As a follow up to last week- yesterday we actually brought some birds to the strap! It was the Pheasant
opener here in MA. Here is Stephen with a limit of Pheasant. Before anyone asks, yes- we are allowed
to shoot hens...... and they taste the same as the roosters!
Stephen's only comment after the first bird went up and was harvested, "Wow, they make a lot more noise
and are alot bigger than a Woodcock- I think I like hunting Pheasant better!"
He's officially jaded...........
