Hi folks I am traveling south from washington through oregon and back home to Eureka, CA. I have a young GSP and we don't have very much wild bird exposure so I would like to get him as much as possible. I have heard eastern oregon is a good place to be chasing chukar so we are traveling through the east side of the state. Thinking of taking the I-84 to ontario then heading back through burns and to alturas.
I am hoping some of you that have more experiance in this area could point me in the right directions with what areas are good for chukar and grouse or any other upland game on the east side of oregon and modoc ca area. Not asking for your secret spot just point me to some general area where i may have better luck. Any tips or tricks are very appreciated
Thank you

When you hit Alturas, you will still be a little to far north and west for Chukars in California. Further south on 395 from the Spanish Peak Area through the Skedaddles near Susanville does hold birds but the area was burned and the hatch was tough. The birds are mature holdover birds and hard to hunt. You would have to cut west to Eureka via Susanville. In Alturas there are wildlife areas and BLM land that holds a lot of California Valley Quail in the drainages and along sage and grass transitions. Look for water sources and you should find quail, it appears that they fared better than the chukars in the region.

BLM land on the banks of the Brownlee Reservoir is a good bet, head east from Baker City toward Halfway and Richland there is a lot of public land. If you want a really specific spot pm me and I will give you directions.

Re: oregon chukar hunting
Thanks a lot for the info. Ill have to try for some quail when we get around alturas. I think we are going to take 299 to redding so might not make it to susanville. hopefully we get our filling of chukar country in oregon. I have never been after chukar so all i know is to look around rocks and up high.
