Chukar scouting trip. (pics)

There was a break in the storm today, so I took my best helper out on a scouting trip. We were in search of the elusive pen raised Chukar. The Division of Wildlife releases birds in different areas right before the opener. This gives a chance for those new to the sport to get a taste of chukar hunting. Also gives a chance for those seasoned wild Chukar hunters to get a bit of sweet revenge on some easy ones. In any case, we found some and had a great little hike. Chukar season opens in Utah tomorrow. Good luck to those who are headed out.

Are they just "Hawk Bait"? Are they really that easy to find?

Camryn practiced shooting (a camera) a bit.

Cooper locked up on point in the sage brush. The Chukar stayed around long enough for a quick shot.

Soon after, Cowboy locked up in the road.

They were everywhere. The dogs weren't sure what to do at that point. They did hold steady while I flushed the birds and snapped some photos. I was happy with the dog work.

My favorite.

I can always count on Cowboy always to find the mud hole.

Pen raised ???
That's cheating !
I spent 3 hours hiking yesterday just to get where the Chukars were. We got into several coveys and alot of singles. This is my boys first year hunting. After we were done he said Dad I don't think I like Chukar hunting too much. Poor kid was plum wore out. I had better go easier on him next time.
