Banks First Goose

Went goose hunting today,
Banks retrieved his firs goose, shot one at about 60 yards, but only winged it. Sent the dog thinking it was dead and the bird was flapping and hissing to heck. Banks swam back. I think he was just overwhelmed at the size of it, and to be honest i myself wouldn't want to deal with an angry 20lb goose!
After i shot it a few more times i sent him probably 3 different times until he finally grabbed it and brought it to shore.
Really proud of him, we have not trained for anything like this and it was a lot to ask of him to retrieve a bird 6x the size of anything else he has seen, let alone a live one.
Sorry if I'm boring you all with my posts, but there is a lot of firsts this season and I want to share it!
Thanks,
Isaac and Banks

I do not know of a good way to train for wounded Canadas. I had a well trained golden get her butt kicked by one. The usual soft mouthed girl went after every goose thereafter with her fangs barred, growling. She took it personally.
I think you have already learned, but try to dispatch them before sending the dog. They are big and tough.
I think Banks did just fine, at his age it is all learning, everything is new the first time.

It looks like you have a duck dog, or should I say waterfowl dog? That photo is one you will enjoy for the rest of your life.

Experience is sometimes the best teacher in this instance. Keep killing them for him and pretty soon wounded or not he will be sailing out on land or water and snatching them up for you. I would imagine it won't be long before he would prefer to chase after a wounded goose than a dead one. Believe it or not that retrieve gained him a tremendous amount of confidence and he will not forget it.
Awesome photo! Looks like a dandy spot.

You never really know if a dog is going to be a "goose dog" until it becomes one.

Congrats, My little black lab got his butt kicked by a goose at about 8 months old during early goose season, now every goose that goes down gets its head ripped off before he even thinks about bringing it back to the blind. keep up the good work, and im sure by the end of the season you will have a retriever to be proud of

Shooting a goose at 60 yards? You must have been using HeviShot.
20 lb goose  Most all of us overestimate the weight of geese, until we actually have them weighed on a certified scale.
The world record for a GIANT (not just a Greater) is 24 lbs. Looking at your picture, I'd guess this Greater was 12 to 14 lbs.
Very nice bird though

Always has to be someone to piss on a kids parade. We should rejoice in the fact that the kid took the time to train his own dog. How many snot nosed brats these days take the time to get off their arses to do anything close to what this kid has?
I dont give a rip if the goose was 2 pounds or 20 pounds, give this kid the credit and respect he is due.
iSSAK, GREAT POST KID, KEEP THEM COMING!!!!

Your right i did exagerate on the weight, didnt weigh him but it was a big goose.
The shot was atleast 60 yards, the pond we hunted is probably 200 across and we used 3 1/2 inch bb
