Next trip

Post by lockedncupped » Thu Oct 31, 2013 7:51 am

Guys I just returned from a trip to SD. I reside in Columbia S. Carolina so it was quite the drive. I had a fantastic time hunting, and the bird numbers were fine for me. I had to walk all day from noon to 6 to get a limit, but I had the chance to limit everyday. I never did limit in 7 days of hunting. I did technically limit one afternoon but I couldn't find the 3rd rooster in the cattails. My dad even walked back to the truck and got the ol pro Chesapeake out and she couldn't find the rooster. I don't know what the glory days were like, this was my first trip to SD. I had only hunted pheasants in Michigan before this and it was not even close in comparison. My biggest question now is what's next? I have already decided that SD will be an annual trip, but the season is early and I live 1000 miles minimum away from any wild birds. I have another week off starting the 14th of Novemeber, I was thinking about heading to Kansas, or Iowa? I used my SD license for the 1st ten days of season as I didn't know how long I was going to stay. I could just take the dog to the local game preserve and buy some pheasants and work on training. I just have this empty feeling like I need to be out walking and hunting. I do think a trip to the local preserve is in order, as I probably taught the dog a few bad things in SD. The first handful of roosters we shot at he pointed, the last 2/3 he flushed, or I flushed up. The birds were not pointed, I have no idea how to stop him from chasing them. I just want to get out and hunt. Maybe a grouse trip is in order? Any suggestions on hunting location?

I did not know this! My bad for not checking. My uncle told me you could not. Shame on me. I need to plan this out.

Not only can you buy another one, but there is a date in Dec. where you can buy the license and use 5 days this year and 5 next year.

There is always ruff grouse in the mountians NC, TN.....and woodcock if they make it that far. Also should be some quail left in costal NC if not costal SC too......

The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

I would be tempted to spend the rest of this year working with your dog and get him steady on point before hunting again.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Ezzy going to the local preserve Sat to work on just that. Not sure I will spend the season training only......I gotta hunt and this is the only bird dog I got. I know my greed long term will not pay dividends.

Thank you for your report! I also came back from SD, and I loved my rooster trip.

I think that you can buy a second 2x5 days permit in SD.
