South Dakota Phez Hunting

After a rough year in Sodak we are looking to change the area we hunt. Does anyone know of accommodations / private / public hunting land that a group can rent for 4-5 days? Currently we hunt the Britton area, but would entertain other opportunities. We do not want to break the bank and would like to stick to hunting wild birds....we can stay in WI for game farm birds. Where do you guys stay?

Thanks, Greg

You may want to try Selby/Pierre area. Bird numbers were better and hunting pressure lower there than in the NE part of the state. At least that was the case a couple of years ago. Sorry, but I don't have anywhere in particular to recommend for pheasants. Oahe reservoir army corps of engineer land can hold good numbers of grouse however.

I hunt south of Pierre and the bird numbers are way, way down in that area. Last year's severe drought and the lack of cover last winter knocked them for a loop, then they didn't get a hatch at all this spring because of poor cover and bad weather.

On a positive note, they have very good cover this fall and things should rebound in 2014. It is going to take a couple good years minimum to get back to the great population we once had.
