Food additive

I hunted with a gentlemen years ago that fed his two pointers before we left out in the morning. He added something to their food that smelled awful and looked even worse. I remember it being a soupy concoction. I've always wondered what it might be. Do any of y'all feed something like that and why?

Could be a homemade carbohydrate mixture to help the dogs last longer in the field
