Brand new to bird dog hunting with Brittany

Post by Brittany birddog » Wed Feb 05, 2014 2:37 pm

Looking to train my Brittany.. Haven't had time to do it yet. He is now 11months. Looking for advice to train him myself, but do not no where to start.
Am I still ok to train at 11 months? Looking to just to Upland birds, not waterfowl. Any good books? Or DVD? Any advice would be great

One of the best things you could do would be to join a NAVHDA chapter. They have training days and you could get some one to help mentor you. They also are a source of birds and launchers. If you don't want your dog to blood trail or water retrieve ducks you can leave that part of the training out and just concentrate on the upland stuff. A good DVD program is perfect start/ perfect finish(sometimes you can pick them up used on the forum). An eleven moth old Brittany is trainable, you just have to get them bird crazy :D You might want to post where you are at and someone on the forum, might be able to train with you.

The Perfect Start DVD set is very complete. Just got it myself and am very happy with it. I know I won't need anything else but it's fun to read other stuff too. All I need now is my new pup!

Ok, just wondering if we had dogs from the same breeder. I got mine from a different kennel. Brittanys are fun dogs to have

Also, the woodcock migration in the spring is a great way to get a dog exposed to wild birds. These birds are good for a pointing dog because they will sit for a point.

Almost 4 years ago I got a GSP and had no idea on how to train a dog. I used the perfect start and the perfect finish and I ended up with a darn good bird dog. I watched those videos over and over and took notes. Good luck I think you chose wisely.
