If you were looking for some late season (Decemeber) bird hunting (Chickens, Pheasants, Huns, Quail). Where would you go to hunt public lands? I was leaning towards the Pan Handle area of OK. :?:

I would have thrown Kansas in there but one of the guys who has hunted as long as I never had to have a hunter saftey course and was born after 1957. We were headed there. No Saftey courses left in Maine.

Thanks NE Vizla: I just received my Nebraska Atlas package. They say the South west had best numbers followed by the Northeast. It seems there is plenty of public land in both areas.

Im in neither of those two areas and I have yet to go out and not shoot my limit on Roosters. If you are willing to work as hard for them as your dogs are you'll have no problem getting some. As soon as the "cold" weather gets here the hunting should get even better.

I just visited a friend in N Tx near Ok and they have no birds. They had plenty last yr. Pretty sad. Don't know about the rest of Ok tho.

I just got back from the Ok Panhandle area (Beaver). Four small coveys -- two days of hard hunting. Last year I moved 12-15 coveys (20-30 birds) a day. The amount of cover was okay I just think the rain came way too late this year.

All pay to hunt except for one public field, same up around decataur. I used to hunt these areas up until 5 years or so. A huge pay to hunt operation moved in and there was one already there. Farmers say no to hunting as they lease this land to either of the pay to hunt places. A huge area that is overlooked is the indian res north of decataur, you pay 100 bucks to the city hall in macy then you get a map of hunting land that is huge, but if you are caught hunting without a permit you get in deep water with the res police. Sw has a huge public area that is also overlooked by a lot of hunters.

Falls city? We were just south of Indian cave park on public land, saw 3 pheas and 3 coveys of quail. We used to do a motorcycle outing called Shueburt run :) used to circle the town with our bikes there were so many of us, we camped at indian cave. Been a few years now.
