What's the early report saying about the pheasant in southwest KS. Quail in the TX panhandle are looking good.

Two prior years of sharp population decline due to drought (and the associated factors) and now another year of drought. My opinion is that this will be another year of decline and poor hunting opportunities overall. I'm trying my luck elsewhere this year for my second out of state hunt following SD.

One of my friends just got back from his property in KS and said bird numbers are up. There were so many young birds he couldn't run his dogs.

I am just guessing here, but I think he must have gone too far west.

Ended up smoking pot in CO, and started seeing things

Think there are going to be few more birds this season, but nothing spectacular.

Reading on the early reports on Pheasants Forever that numbers in KS are Way Up from last year.

What are you guys seeing?

Starting to plan a trip to KS for the Youth Hunt with the boys and hoping to find a good area to get them into some birds. Went 2 yrs ago and didn't get a single bird. Not much shooting either. Hope for better luck this year.

After spending the last couple days scouting/dove hunting in south central ks here is my assessment. There are defiantly going to be more birds in the fields than there were last year. I would say it is till going to be way below the 10yrs average. I think hunting will be just as tough as the last 2 years because even though the population is up some the good habitat is up exponentially over last year.

After spending the weekend scouting in the local area with the dogs, I saw a ton of birds.
I regret to inform you that every time I walked into one of these:

I would flush huge amounts of these

I saw near 100 turkeys this weekend... sure, bird numbers are awesome. Hope you plan to shoot some of those bass turds.

Talked to a buddy of mine this morning said off of his combine he was seeing at least two different sizes of babies and somtimes three. Thinks there was a double hatch based off of that. Says it is still down overall but big increase from last year. This was in Central KS....

Friend in Liberal, KS (SW corner) says not to bother coming there, even though he has thousands of acres of family land to hunt on. :(

Pheasants do not raise more than one brood. When you see variable size/aged chicks, they are from different birds where some have re-nested after failure and some were successful with an earlier brood.....
