Sharpie hunting outside of burn

Post by fishvik » Sun Oct 09, 2016 8:49 pm

Dogs w sharpies 100916 3.jpg
Went sharpie hunting about a half mile outside of a 52000 acre burn we had this summer. It burned a lot of sharpie habitat and deer and elk winter range. The burn is starting to green up with all the precip we've received in the last month, but will be years to recover the brush and aspen component. Dogs did well and we got a couple.

Looks like a good hunt! Don't be too down about the burn, the aspen especially may surprise you, they do better with fire. The hard part will be keeping the grazers and browsers at bay as everything loves aspen shoots and new brush growth to chew on.

Yeah it's been my experience that the aspen will come back great guns, I'm most worried about the sagebrush, bitterbrush, wood rose, current and chokecherry reproduction. IDF&G has increased the elk cow and deer doe tags and seasons for the burn and surrounding area to take some pressure off of the habitat.
