Dogs and sharptails

Post by fishvik » Sun Oct 29, 2017 10:31 am

We in Idaho hunt one of the last strongholds for the Columbian subspecies of sharptailed grouse. I’m wondering if they have some real differences when it comes to hunting them with dogs as opposed to the plains subspecies. Take into account I'm talking about well trained steady dogs.
1. Have you noticed that slower speed, closer working dogs tend to not bump as many sharptails out of shooting range ?
2. Darker colored dogs tend to bump less birds?
3. More dogs tend to cause more bumping?
4. As the weather gets colder with no snow that dogs are depending more on foot scent and less on the air scent cone to point birds?

I’m just wondering if anyone else has had these experiences with sharptails.

1,2,and 4, no. 3, We usually run two dogs at a time but often times only one and I have seen no difference.
