Can doves literally continue to fly with their hearts shot
Can doves literally continue to fly with their hearts shot
out?
I have seen gunwriters say this on several occasions.
Could they simply mean that doves are notoriously hard to take down with a shotgun?

Sure. When the adrenaline is pumping, many animals can continue fleeing after a deathblow has been dealt to the heart. I wouldn't say that means they're anymore difficult to take down than any other species, provided you're using the correct equipment and possess a level of skill to use said equipment effectively.

If you hit them, they will fall.JonBailey wrote:out?

If you hit them "in the heart," which could mean the heart or any other hit that avoids major skeletal damage but still causes massive blood loss, they can continue to fly a bit before falling. I've seen ducks fly halfway across a field, apparently unscathed, and fall out of the sky, so no reason it couldn't happen with a dove.
In my experience, they die pretty easy though. Hard to hit, but if you hit them they fall, usually dead and rarely crippled.

I seen numerous birds fly when heart shot. They eventually fall but sometimes after an amazing distance. I had a sharptail fly what I figure had to be a 300 yd circle and then fold about 25 yds from where I shot it as I was ready to shoot it again.

An animal dies when the brain stops working, so there can be and often is a delay of a few seconds after tye shot before the brain runs out of blood.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I've never thought about heart shot doves. My bowhunting deer experience has shown me that a heart shot deer can run pretty far in the 10 or 12 seconds it takes them to expire. Take out one or two of the big vessels at the top of the heart and it's down in 5 seconds.
