Woodcock for Christmas

Post by Willie T » Wed Dec 28, 2022 12:46 pm

 My son has recently graduated from college. It pleases me that he is gainfully employed and making his own way in the world. I also miss the good times we shared bird hunting. He was home visiting for Christmas and we were able to slip away with the dogs on Christmas Eve. We explored a new to us area for Woodcock. I own two pudelpointers. A six year old in his prime and a one year old wild child in his first season that is coming along. We put the six year old on the ground first. I was pleased to be hunting with my son again. Cricket knows the game and is a joy to walk behind. I enjoyed watching my son walk in on his points. In this picture Cricket is corkscrewed into a point with his typical high tail as my son walks in. The bird is somewhat in the open and was a rare layup on a woodcock.

This next picture is my son and Cricket with the three bird limit Cricket pointed and retrieved to hand for my son. The two of them make quite the pair. As I snapped this picture of my son and Cricket with their three bird limit, my day was made!

My son wanted to see the new pup run so we relocated to another promising spot and put Moon on the ground. Moon is blessed with good nose and wheels and hunts hard. In his first year his bird handling lacks the polish of a seasoned dog but he has a lot of point and a soft mouth. Moon points with a flat tail. That has not wavered on a single bird and I kind of dig the straight back all the way to the tip of the tail. In this picture, Moon has a bird pointed about 30 yards in front of his nose. The bird is in the thick young timber you can see in the picture. Those that hunt woodcock already know what walking in on that is gonna be like.

Moon pointed three birds for me. This picture is Moon and the old guy is me with my three bird limit. Talented puppies are such fun!

That is so uplifting to read and see. Thank you.

The good stuff. Just an awesome report in all respects Willie, especially your son’s accomplishments. Great job, and great motivation for all us parents.

Sharon, thank you for the kind words.

Garrison, he is a fine young man. From one of your recent posts I know you had one of your children out in the field with you. Revel in those times my friend. They pass all too quickly…

Thanks NEhomer, I’m just an old bird hunter that is in it for the dogs. I found this site about a year ago. I enjoy seeing what others do with their dogs. Occasionally I share something I get into with my dogs. Seem to be some like minded dog men and women here.
