I shot a monster Rooster the last day of the season and want to have it mounted.

I am looking for some ideas on how to have it done.

I have mine in flight, banking to the right. It shows the size, wingspan, all the good colors, and will remind you of that split second moment when everything around you froze and you instinctivley put that bead on that thunderous poultry.

Bird, some nice mounts there! I'm having a rooster done about the same way. Then going to take 2 of my favorite pointing pics of my dogs blown up & framed and put one on each side of the phez mount......btw, love that tom!

A pair of SD roosters. The taxidermist did like 5 or 6 more just like this after I had him do mine people really liked it I think its cool. I like the scene setting makes it feel like its real.

Sorry for going off of topic a little and for sounding ignorant but, what do you do with the bird you want mounted after you kill it? Do you just freeze it whole or is there a way to dress it?

Care process for Birds for Taxidermy

Post by jbogacki76 » Thu Jan 10, 2008 8:49 am

Here are the proper steps. I do Taxidermy for myself and this is what I was told.

- Do not try to put the bird in your game bag. 90 % of the time you will bend the tail and mess up feathers.
- Bring it to the car ASAP. The quality of the bird will equal the quality of the mount
- Stick some toilet paper in the mouth. This prevents blood from running out onto the feathers. This will also help in the thawing process for the taxidermist.
- carefully lay the bird out. Wings tucked in and head folded under the wing.
- Roll the body in some paper towels. You can also roll newspaper around it. (be cautious though. If the feathers are light the print may run off on them)
-DO NOT BEND THE TAIL ON A ROOSTER. Try to lay it as flat so the tail stays as straight as possible.
- MOST IMPORTANT THING. Make sure the bird is cooled off before you stick it into the freezer.

I have always been told to place the bird in one of your wife's old nylon stockings with the head tucked under a wing and then freeze it. This has worked well for me as it seems to keep the feathers from being torn out.

Thanks guys. I haven't had one worth mounting in a few years and the one I had a couple of years ago I wasn't sure what to do so I just ate him. I keep the tail feathers off of every rooster I shoot and his are by far the longest in the bunch, when people see those feathers they can't believe I didn't mount it!! One day I'll get another.

I mounted the 1st Wild Rooster I shot over my dog. It is almost 8 years old and still looks great.

Everytime I walk into my office at home, I see it and remember my trip with him to Iowa. I plan on mounting my last bird that I take over him as well.

Mounts are a great way to keep the memories alive.

That's a nice bird, great tail feathers, but could have better spurs from what the picture shows. That is a big bird, probably three if I remember aging correctly. That could also be completely wrong.

some of the secondary feathers coming off the back are missing so that made it an easy decision for me, standing mount. does anyone have a particuar standing mount they favor?

Do a shoulder mount. Here is some of mine. Oh I have to post my new fish mounts also. You got to check out this small mouth. The bluegill is 10 inches to give a perspective. :)

The shouler mount is just something cool to have. Not too many people have a pheasant shoulder mount. I caught that smally at the maumee river here in NW ohio. I accually hooked it when I was on top of the dam and thought it was a catfish. I reeled it up to the dam and it jumped up onto the bottom of the dam and I saw it was a smally. I pretty much imediatly slide down the dam into the water and very luckily still had it on. Was a good day for sure.

I do thise myself. Real easy just let them dry in the shape you want them in then use screws or nails to hook them to a piece of wood.

Guys,
JBogacki has done some freaking amazing mounts, I have seen many of his and they are nothing short of amazing, the innovative ways he uses his mounts is awesome. Here is a guy who spends alot of time studying mounts, along with having a very nice birddog he is a very good taxidermist as well. I'll try and post some pics if I still have them.

Some grouse mounts. He has done a white chukar mount and a black melanistic pheasant that are absolutely beautiful, still trying to find them.

That is a great grouse mount. Amazing.

Just adding: If you're going to do just a single tail fan mount or something, make sure you find the oil glands at the base and cut them off. Especially with turkey. It would be better even more if you saturated the base of the tail in salt for a few days. Then you can literally just pin it how you want and let it dry. Really easy.

Whatever way you choose to mount it remember one thing. You get what you pay for. So, don't go cheap.

So many people try to shop prices and you will get what you pay for. Plus, ask to see some previous photo's of the Taxidermists work.

Nice rooster by the way.
