Galesburg, IL

Post by Flash0507 » Fri Jan 11, 2008 2:18 pm

Looking to take my 7 month old lab out and get him around some birds. Anyone know where the closest place to Galesburg would be to take him? I'm new to the area so I'm not sure. I have found several hunt clubs but most are 2 hours away, just hoping to find something closer. Thanks

Get on 30 and go west into Iowa :) get off the highway, knock on a few doors. Season is over for pheas but the birds are still there to play around with.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Oops, I meant highway 34. got em mixed up again. Just west of Burlington into Iowa birds can be found. When we lived in Ill never hunted, that was like 1970 or so, we took Chicago folks to Omaha and Ne for some fine hunting back then. I remeber cars full of guys driving at night to make opening day :) dog in the back seat on top of me and my brother. Kept us warm he did :)

Gobblers Knob Hunting Preserve near Canton, IL should be about an hour from you. I preserve hunt there a few times a year and he always has good birds.

Owner Don Deuel is a nice guy who would probably help you with your pup if you asked. He has quail and pheasant. He might let you use his homing pigeons if you just want to intro your pup to birds.

You have to have a hunting license to work wild birds or train on public land.

Do you need a training permit on public lands?
Do you need a training permit on private non Preserve lands?
Do you need a propigation permit for raising birds?

Here in Maine we need the bottom two if you will be shooting birds training birds, and you need to specifiy the towns you will train in. Not many do, not much enforcement either. I think on public land there is some kind of permit but I am not sure what it is.

We do not need a permit to work a dog on wild birds(no shooting in off season Heh heh.)
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.
