Winchester Model 12
Winchester Model 12
My dad was a big shooter/hunter/collector/outdoorsman, and his shotguns were pumps. His favorites were the Winchester 97 and Model 12s.
So when I got back into shotgun shooting recently after a 30 year layoff, I found myself a nice old 16 gauge Model 12. I've really enjoyed it a lot, it functions perfectly and has all the class and character you'd expect of an American shotgun made in 1952. It's not a collector's item, I bought it to use. So - sorry to offend purists - but I had Briley fit it for screw-in chokes to give me some more versatility. When my dog comes (September!!) I plan to do some bird shooting with this gun (it's the top one in the photo).
At a recent show I picked up the middle gun in the pic, a 1949 12 gauge with a fixed modified choke. I just did some skeet/trap with it yesterday and it's really a great gun. I like having the 12 gauge for target practice because shells are so easy to come by. But my intent is to have the 16 gauge as my bird gun. I went chukar hunting on a preserve with it last fall with a friend and the gun performed very well, that was before the Briley chokes.
Anyway, I just wanted to share. It's not the prettiest or most modern gun, but I think this ol' 16 will make a nice upland bird gun.

The M12 is a classic. If I had the money, I'd have a M42 (M12 in 410), and M12's in 28, 20 and 12 all in skeet plus a nice M12 trap gun.

I understand those M42s are hard to come by and expensive when you do.Greg Jennings wrote:The M12 is a classic. If I had the money, I'd have a M42 (M12 in 410), and M12's in 28, 20 and 12 all in skeet plus a nice M12 trap gun.

I do think that a M12 in 20 gauge would complete a nice trifecta though!

I've been looking fro a M12 -28 for about 10 years. Just don't want to spend 2500$. Your right it would be a nice set W/ 12,16,20,28. Some day in a far far away land !!!

I stumbled over a M12 WS1 with solid rib in very good condition, zero rust, for cheap this past week. It's got a cheap imitation of a Cutts on it. I'm going to replace it with a real Cutts, get it reblued and put some nicer wood on it. It'll be something nice to trot out every once in a while.

Sounds like a cool project, Greg. Don't forget to take some 'Before' pictures!Greg Jennings wrote:I stumbled over a M12 WS1 with solid rib in very good condition, zero rust, for cheap this past week. Will do.
I used it to kill some birds for my partner's dogs. It shoots very nice. Very loud due to that knock-off Cutts, but very nice.
