Ammo Choice For hunting Pheasants and Quail

Post by romeo212000 » Tue Jan 13, 2009 7:06 pm

Going to be taking the dogs out for some birds again next weekend. The place we are going is in North Central Oklahoma and is all private land, and has not been hunted once this year. Supposedly there are several pheasants out there and should be some quail too. I have never hunted this place, but got invited because of my dogs (Perks of having good dogs  ). Anyway, I wanted to get you guys take on what load to use when you will potentially run across both types of birds. I am thinking maybe 1 1/8 oz of 6's. To be honest I dont have a great deal of experience in this. I hunt mostly quail and carry 7 1/2's for the occasional Rooster the dogs may find, and limit myself to relatively close shots on em when they do.

I've seen plenty of pheasant killed with 1oz of #7 1/2. However in high winds #6 are better. Of course skill and choke
can make a difference. I have a friend who has killed as many pheasant as any one I know and he shoots 3/4 oz of #6
with his 28 ga. side x side. He's good!

If there is a chance of mixed bag hunting, I use 20 ga. 7.5 Federal either Hi- Brass or Heavy Field Load out of an Improved Cylinder. If your dogs are good, you should not have a problem.

1 1/8 is a good load for both, just give quail that extra second. I would say #6 no problem...you will be thankful for it when you run into a rooster. If I was just going for rooster I would #4 or #5.

I use #7 shot for everything (pheasant, chukar, and quail).
