20ga. or 28ga. ?

Looking into getting another shotgun. Decided on a CZ.. Canvasback 20g 26" barrels or Mini-Redhead 28ga 26" barrels both O/U.. The gun would be for "me"

and my 14 yr old son.. He's finding out shooting sporting clays is a blast.. He was using my Rem. 1100 lt 20ga.. and our single shot 410.. Just can't decided on what gun to get.. I hunt mostly grouse in the Nothern U.P of michigan.. and some game farm pheasants... Any input would be great

20 gauge without a doubt, just because of the versatility and availability of ammo.

I bought a 20 gauge canvasback with 28" barrels as kinda a niche gun for my collection, but like the darn thing so much that it has become my main hunting gun.

Regarding barrel length. my first 12 gauge O/U was a 26" barrel and while light and real handy I didnt relaize how short the gun really was. Remember when comparing barrel lengths on O/U to pumps and autos, there is no added length of an action. A 30" barreled O/U is about the same length as a 26" barreled repeater.

Thanks, for the feeddback,,,I did measure my 1100 LT 20 overall lenght was around 49" inches.. when looking at some of the 26" inch barels it states a 43 1/2 overall lenght. The 410 that we have is around 42 inches and my son really likes the way it feels in his hands..

sounds like some people don't have any reservations about the 28.. I see you can buy a reloader for 150$ something I always wanted to do in our long winters,can't always ice fish.. So you've never has any real problems dropping a bird wih the 28? I hate using the 12ga early in the season and it just blows away woodcock. My son would use the 28, or the 1100 20..As they would fit him.Our local Walmart carries 2 different brands of 28 ga shells..Granted they are 2 bucks a box more, so evry
3 rd. box you could buy a box of 20's. I only shoot around 3 rounds of sporting clays a year,and maybe a box of clays thrown by my son at the farm to get me ready for bird season..Thanks

Howie, i have pheasant hunted with a few guys that use a 28 on roosters. They get the job done pretty well if the shooter does their job. A twenty may be a bit more forgiving for us that are sometimes wingshooting challenged.

I love the 28 gauge, I have three of them now, 2 Veronas and I just added a Caesar Guerini Woodlander with a Left handed stock.

I shoot my 28s better than the 20 and they kick so much less. . .28 for grouse is the way to go. . .of course, there are no grouse in Michigan, so I mean those Wis and Min grouse.

I don't think you could go wrong with either.
I don't think the recoil from most 20 gauges would bother most 14 year olds, but if you are truly worried about recoil, the 28 may be better.
Ammo, as has been covered previously, will be cheaper and more available in the 20 gauge. Lots more non-toxic options available in 20 gauge, too.
I'll tell you what, with my 28, it thows as dense as pattern at 25 yards as any of my 12 gauges.
Either choice will be a good one.

Go with the 20 ga. as it's much more versatile. You can load up with 1 oz loads for dove, and down to 3/4 oz loads for bobwhites and clays. The standard 7/8 oz takes care of the rest. You can even put a slug bbl on (if you're so inclined and have that kind of gun in mind) and go after deer. You can find a ton of recipes for reloads (I love the 3/4 oz loads in a 20 ga) and finding shells in a pinch is MUCH easier and less expensive.

The 20 can do anything the 28 can do, and can do it cheaper. The 28 can't do everything the 20 can do.

I'm not really overly worried about recoil, he shot the 12 and thought nothing of it

I just want something that He can handle and get good with, Not to mention something lighter for me to carry once and a while. 90% of my upland hunting is grouse and woodcock here in the U.P....
Just worried that the 28 might be small on the late season hunts..Have heard that thier is a big difference in the 26" and 28" barrels.. Really need to get one in hand and see for myself how they feel.. Did manage to measure our 410-and My 1100 LT 20 ga.. one was 41" and the 20 around 49" inches.. So need to look for something in that area for size.. Always thought it would be fun to reload,so a 20 would make more sense that way and can reload for 2 guns... Have time to choose.

I have hunted with both,and the recoil diffrence is very slight.There is nothing wrong with a 28,but I wont own another.You are just giving twice as much for shells with no benefit.
