I have decided to refinish the stock on one of my SKB 200E's. This will be new ground for me so I need help. I understand there are different materials available as well as different methods of doing the actual work. If you have refinished a stock I would like to hear about it, the more detailed the better.
Thanks, Charles

I refinished the stock on my Sparten 310. In my case I use acetone to remove the factory oil. Next sanded and fitted the wood the the metal better. Next slightly restained. Then came the Tru-oil. I believe it was about 12 coats, lightly sanding with steel wool between. Turned out real nice.
I hope I can post this, but heres a good read and lots of info available too. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=117061

Whitedog,

I really appreciate that offer. The thing is, I have to work out of town for the next several months which means lonely nights in a motel room. I was thinking it will give me something to do to help pass the time.

I'm sure I will need a lot of help during the process so would appreciate the opportunity to get your advice from time to time?

I can tell you how I do it for the most part. But I wouldn't want to do it away from my shop..... let alone in a motel room. All kinds of bad smells and maids knocking over a wet stock.

I've done two stocks....use Homer Formsbey to get off old coat...light rubbing with fine steel wool with acetone...and finish with Watco's Danish finish oil....hand rubbed until the stock wouldn't take any more.

The finish oil brought out the grain. I know a lot of guys use Truoil...been happy with Watco's

Can't see the finish that well, but the top two are the ones I redid
