Lots of good options in that price range. You can find a number of the Beretta 686 models (686S, Ultralight and Silver Pigeon II) for under $2k. I personally like the Berettas because of the compact action which makes it somewhat lighter than most, and the ability to add additional barrel sets and upgraded wood fairly easily. Gander Mountain has a Beretta 686 with blued action that they carry for usually $1295; lot of gun for the money.
Browning has a number of their Citori models in that price range as well. Lots of options there; get a catalog to understand what's available.
Ruger has their Red Label; I'm not a huge fan but they are fine guns. Franchi has a bunch of guns under $2k; they tend to be very light weight and a bit cheaper than the comparable Beretta/Browning models.
I know where there are some Rizzini shotguns for $1700 with some killer wood on them; sitting in a Gander Mountain in Madison, WI.
All depends on what you are looking for, your personal preferences and what you intend to use the gun for.
Personally, I'd look at some of the guns on the used market first. Some fairly nice guns out there in the $800 - $1200 range that are a much better value when compared to new guns in the same price range.

Dave is right. I would shop the used market, and also my prefered method- Firearms Auctions/estate auctions. You can find some higher end models of your favorite manufacturers in like new and /or never fired condition for a considerable savings. That's about the onlky way I do it now and have come accross some gems!

Whatever you do, don't get in a hurry to buy. I have 3 SKB 585 series that i love to shoot. You can find good used ones for around a grand . My 20 guage is 17 years old and is in great condition and i use the heck out of it.
