Hey guys, a buddy of mine is selling his gradfathers old Rem 48 16ga. He doesnt want much for it, and I figure since I knew the old man, and I figure in a few years my buddy might wish he had it back Im going to buy it.

So, since Im going to buy it I do intend to use it some, the old man was an avid quail hunter and if I remember correctly the bore was opened to near cylinder. other than that it is just an old shot gun.

What can y'all tell me about this piece in general? Good? Bad? Ugly?

The Model 48 is the streamlined Model 11, which was very slightly different from the Auto 5....an improved" long-recoil, I suppose Remington said.
Remington made a Sportsman Model 48 which was a 3-shot autoloader...always thought that made sense.
The Auto 5 was made in a 3-shot as well but darn few.
I shot a friend's Model 11-48 once but never owned one...should perk along but parts are likely a growing issue.
A plain barrel Sportsman in 16 gauge would be nice, less than 7# I'm guessing....near-chokeless is a neither here nor there factor for a hunting gun....$200, mostly less, in good shape, eh?.

I figured for $100 I couldn't be in too bad a shape......

I had an 11-48 in 28ga back in the early 70's. Hadn't learned to appreciate the 28 then.

heck for 100 bucks I woulda bought it and never looked back...

Oh, its already bought and in the case awaiting some "maintenance" gona have to repair the forearm, and find a bolt handle, but Im in no rush.
