Ruger Red label O/U

Post by Hilltop » Sat Nov 08, 2014 10:11 am

What would one expect to pay for a used Ruger Red Label 20 gauge in excellent condition with 5 chokes. Been following this post for a while and just getting others opinion. Also I see that others posted that they are a red label guy can you tell me why?

I like them because they are well built, they fit pretty good, they shoot where they are pointed, and I have never had any problems with them. I have a 20 ga.(28") & a 12 ga.(30")---the 12 is a little heavier than I like but the 20 ga is light and great for carrying around. They only came with 3 choke tubes, so you would have to go to an after market choke supplier(Carlson's, Brilley's, etc.). I don't know what the used value would be. I'm sure you could look it up in the blue book of gun values. I know Ruger started making the 12 gauge again and I believe the new one is less than $1500. I Don't think they have started to make the new 20 gauge yet(I might be wrong on that).

The new Red Label 20 gauge was suppose to be released this fall (not sure if it will ever be released), the 12 gauge had been selling new for about $1100. Right now I think $1100 would be about the right price, if the new ones hit the market that would drop. The fit and finish on my 12 gauge RL are excellent and the wood is outstanding compared to other guns in the $1200-2000 price range, with that said I have seen many with unremarkable wood. The gun itself is on the heavy side, do to the SS receiver.

It's a solid well made gun made in the US - there are much better choices & far worse choices in a gun.

Handle a couple and decide for yourself whether one is right for you.

I would personally seek out an older 20ga and wouldn't give much more than about $800.00 for one...a little more depending on the individual pc if it was particularly nice & felt I had to have it...they did make them w/an english grip...the 28ga seems to have a bit of a following.

There was a used 12GA Red Label 26" that was in nice shape on the rack at Cabelas this evening for $1100. So... real world is much less than that because those guys suck! :D

I am a Red Label guy for a few reasons...They fit me. They are made in USA. They are beautiful in my eyes, with just plain SS receiver. As such, they may go for 1000 -1500. I just paid 1325 for this one, and feel good about it. I have a couple of 12's, but this 20 is a real treat. My pup likes it, too. :D There is a gun out there that fits you, even though it may not be a Red Label. Do yourself a favor and do not settle for a gun that does not fit and feel right.

I have an old 1981 20ga, RL 26" that I purchased used 10 years ago for $625. Love it. Some day I will get a 28 since as I grow older I would like a little less weight in the field.

Any gun can be made to fit you, usually pretty darn easy and inexpensively.

I ended up with a Mossberg International™ Silver Reserve II Sporting O/U with Ejectors 12 Ga. 28" Vent Rib Barrel; Fiber Optic Dual Bead Sightst; Satin/Select Black Walnut Stock; Sport Choke Tube Set (5). This gun felt right and and the price is great for what you get . No complaints got it mid pheasant season and have shot a few Roosters with it. Only complaint is I wish I would have made the purchase earlier.
