ding ding ding round one in the left corner benelli's montefeltro in the right beretta's 390 which is better. Settle an age old debate between my dad and i and give me your opinions.

Might want to throw the Franchi 720 in there for a lower cost alternative. I got one fro my wife and I love it.

I'd probably take the Benelli for a pure field gun but would go for the Beretta if I was going to shoot any competition or dove hunts where I shot a lot and didn't have to carry it over hill and dale.

Both are quality guns. It all boils down to personal preference. Go with the one which fits and feels the best.

Although I love my Berettas, Benelli's Montefeltro is arguably the best autoloader ever made.

I've had the monte for over 12 years now and it has never failed me. Some days i forget how to use it and the bird gets away, but it is really a great gun! I wouldn't want to be in the field with any other auto loader.

Like chaingang said the one that feels the best is probably your best bet. To me that would be the montefeltro. Both gun's are high quality and you may not notice much of a difference in performance. I own several autoloading shotguns and in my mind you can't beat the benelli.

Bottom line, the Benelli is a more foolproof field gun.

My dad has the Super Black Eagle. It's a wonderful piece of engineering. Had a duck boat overturn one time, the SBE went into the mud at the bottom of the hole. I fished it out, shook the water out of it and it shot like a champ all day.

OTOH, that inertia mechanism that is so simple and so reliable doesn't soak up the recoil the way that the gas mechanism in the Beretta does.

The soft recoil and shootability of the Beretta make it a favorite of skeet shooters.

Still a lot of 1100's out there on the skeet field, though.

I wish Beretta would incorporate the gas system and design of the Xtrema2 to the the lighter Urika 391 upland line. In my mind the Xtrema system is much simpler and a stronger design overall. Less complicated and easier to field strip and clean. I have close to 10,000 rounds thru my original Xtrema in a little over 4 years, and can remember only couple times that it had any failure to feed issues or any issues for that matter. It has seen some pretty harsh conditions waterfowling in North Dakota, and performed flawless. I have some friends who have Benelli's who have had their fair share of issues, so no brand foolproof. With these two brands, fit and feel IMO is still the best criteria to use when selecting one.

Funny you should mention the benelli going into the drink and performing flawless. Made me remember this entertaining little Xtrema2 video clip on performance. There's a pond submerge test in there.

I have had a xtrema for a few years now no problems I shoot about a 1000 rds or more a year from trap to field(quail,pheasant,P.chickens,turkey,and doves).Ilove that gun.But a few weeks ago I bought a new Monte 20ga. took it out thanksgiving afternoon and got two in an hour I love it comfortable and light.Why not just buy both.I will use them both for everything, well I guess the monte wont just ride around in the pickup though.

The word that I have is that Benelli has been part of the Beretta holdings since 1983. Anyone have any inside info?

Don't have any inside info, but that has been common knowledge for quite a while. Used to be that H&K (Heckler & Koch) was the sole distributor here in the USA, then Benelli USA was formed.

I owned a 390 and a 391, currently use Montefeltro's. I may be an odd case but I didn't care for the 390 at all, it beat me to death shooting clays. Don't know why but I find the M1 to be a much easier shooting gun with light loads. The 391 is considerably better on the cheek and shoulder than the 390 but still not the equal of the Benelli.

Beretta only imports SAKO they do not own them. I have both guns and I would go with the Monty or M2 over the Beretta. Much easier to clean, lighter, and better balanced.
