Do you keep your dogs inside, outside or are they seasonal and why? I keep mine inside, I've found that they make for better hunting partners in that they get to respect you more.

I put Seasonal, but mine are in their kennel during the day, and inside most of the time when we are home.... Bell sleeps under our bed, and Kage sleeps in his crate... The kid LOVES his crate....

Inside. SMP's do not do well in a kennel. They need to be with their family. Bred that way for centuries.

inside.... though after reading that post on kennels and cleaning up about 4 thousand muddy pawprints off of my newly mopped kitchen floor.... it would be so nice to have a kennel off my house like that fun one grant had linked in his post where the dogs could stay when we are not home and when we need a little break from one another!! maybe one day.....

Inside. They wouldn't know what to do without a couch and a bed. Plus, they need to be with their people.

And I agree with Country-side, I think there's something to be said for the training benefits of bonding with your dog.

Right now I don't have much choice we live in an apartement, but we are moving here shortly into a house & he will still be an inside dog though there are plans to build kennels for daytime use.

Mine were outside for about 20 years, but I always hated it. The kids and I ganged up on the wife a few years ago, and they are inside dogs now. She (the wife) would now not have it any other way, because the dogs turned out to be dolls. Wonderful with the kids. Grandson is now 22 months, and his first word when he comes in the door is still "dog," as in "Where is the dog!!!" Although he is learning "horse." No, those we do not keep indoors.

I used to let them run the house when it was just the dogs and I. Altho I found that if kept inside and I hunt on a -40 day, the dogs get cold very easy, keep em outside and they dont seem to care if it is 20 or -20.

Large kennels, petsafe radio fence for when I am home so they run 4 acres or so, lots of exercise and keeps racoons feral cats etc away.

Outside, but I always have one or two that are house dogs. Don't ask how I choose it just happens.

Inside. I don't think Justus would have it any other way. I would assume that when we get more dogs they'll be inside as well. Danyelle says I'll have to build them a special section of the house before she'll allow more than 2 inside though.

I put seasonal because during the summer (which is nearly all year) when it is over 90, they are in the house. Rusti has her bed or mine and Duke loves his crate. He does get to spend some time on the couch, but because he has this absolute HATE for anything plastic, he can't be left out like Rusti. It works out great. On cooler days, they are both outside.

We keep ours in the house,two gordons and one weim. Each has their own crate in the house for when we are not home. We have a large back yard that has a six foot privacy fence around the perimiter where they get to play when we are home. That does not prevent the mad dashes up the stairs and through the bedrooms and den. Seems to make for dogs that are always looking to check where you are at when hunting.SDGORD

I fenced off my side yard so they can get good exercise and built a 6' x 18' kennel in the garage so they can come in out of the weather, but they (all 4) eat and sleep indoors.

Mine sleeps inside on my bed. during the summer they are outside during the day but we leave the door screens and windows open so they can see and hear us. In the winter she is attatched to my hip. Waits for me by the front window and only goes out to do her thing then is back in. She hates the cold.

Mine are in the house except during the day when we are at work. They she is in her run in the backyard, with a insulated doghouse!!

Most of the time, Bell either sleeps with us or in my son's bed!!

We have too many usually to keep inside continuously.

I have a 5 kennel building (10' x 24') with runs, and they spend their days there, but when either the weather gets too inclement (we live in Canada) or the mosquitos too fierce, they spend their nights in the house.

I do heat the kennel, but it still gets below freezing in there when its -30 or so, and we have lots of those days Dec. thru Feb., and some pointers are VERY sensitive to cold.

I have a hunting bred beagle, who will sit outside in his kennel run in conditions I can't believe, just looking around, in case a rabbit should wander by, and he's half the size of the pointers.

Mine is inside when I am home, outside when i'm gone. However he goes pretty much everywhere I do except work. I always said a dogs place is outside, then I found myself enjoying the company of my dog in the house and my mind was changed forever

I put inside but I have a doggie door to the backyard. The vizsla will stay inside if it is too cold and only go outside to "use the facilities". On a warmer day he prefers outside. The Shiba's love the cold but will come inside if it is too warm. One shiba(10 year old Toshi, former puppymill breeder) prefers to stay outside all the time but will come at night to sleep. Actually, they all sleep inside.

I put outside to many to have in house with 5 kids but my retired dogs live in side during the winter and I let all of them in occasionally and house train them when their puppys

I believe in having inside dogs no matter their purpose. I dont disagree with other methods just prefer them to be inside. My girlfriends dog is a black lab/bull mastiff mix and sleeps in my double bed with us. He weighs 100 pounds and is not any bit fat. I am getting a Chessapeake Bay Retriever soon enough, and I predict Im going to have to move up to a queen size bed. I do want them to be acclimated to our Canadian weather, but will do it on my time by taking them out on their daily runs. I believe only if I were to live in the arctic or a very cold region would I let them sleep outside as they would need to be fully used to the freezing temps, my dogs wil never have to be however

Same way here, I believe the dogs should be inside with the family, cuz afterall, they are part of our family. We have 5 dogs total but they are very well behaved and pretty much couch potatoes inside. 2 are setters, one mutt, a sheltie, and a toy poodle. Eventually though, a kennel might have to be an option, I mean, sheesshh only so many can fit on your bed lol.

Ours stay in the house. Not only do the neighbors not complain about any barking when we're not home, the dogs also serve as a home protection service.

The UPS driver left packages on the back lawn for a year after one of the big dogs we had went after him through a sidelight next to the front door.

I've got 1/4" Lexan screwed over the sidelights now...

Outside during the day, and in the house at night. They bond with me better, and seem to listen and obey me when we are out in the fields.

Mine are indoors with me. We do have a fenced yard which the spend a fair bit of time in but they are happy to be inside in fout weather.
My male Maverick stays in a kennel when he is at his handler/trainers in PA during the trial seasons. He seems to love coming home and jumping back up on the bed.

I'm suprised by all the inside comments. I thought all hard core hunters kept their dogs outside. I am delighted to learn that most are inside for most of the day. I keep mine inside as they are a part of the family and I agree that it helps to strengthen the bond. We do not let them up on furniture though.

All 4 are strictly inside dogs. They are part of family and pretty much go wherever I go. All are crate trained but 90% of the time they sleep on our bed We either have to buy a king size bed when hubby comes back home, or the dogs have to go back to sleeping downstairs/crates.

Both, my dog is out side when its in the 45-75 range but inside other than that, we usually switch her in and out every few hours.

As I type this my 10 week old setter pup is humpin' my leg so I guess my answer is inside.

I have three runs outside where the four stay during the day but I always let them in at night to keep the neighbors from complaining about barking dogs.

My 11 year old rescue lab was outside for the first 7 years or so, due to renting. Built a house and she has acclimated too well to being inside. Never had potty training issues, as she won't go on anything but grass. She also has to be begged to come up on any furniture. Brought home new gsp pup in Aug 08, and I couldn't have imagined putting her outside. Vowed she wasn't going to be allowed on furniture. Hah! That lasted long as we both got tired of sitting on the floor with her. So I guess my leather furniture is going to be slip covered FOREVER. Pup has a crate for sleeping, but after 5-6am potty--she gets to sleep in the bed with us for an hour. They do have an outdoor kennel for during the summer when we are at work. I think they like that better than staring at my garage walls. Right now, I may as well carry a mop on my hip for muddy pawprints. Thank goodness for hard surface floors. Denise
