Oh, and as an edit--Have always had Fords, and have two diesels right now. 1995 Work truck takes a licking and keeps on ticking with 370,000 miles, and she's still going strong, towing 17,000 pounds every day she goes out. Good truck (future work truck) has 170,000.

Have Owned mostly chevy but after the last 2 2500 hd I have had It will be a long time before I go back I have switched to Dodge about a year ago and sofar so good. The Chevies where in the shop more then on the road one was 2003 and the other was a 2004 everything from brakes to engine failures, and tranny failures also. I have to admitt looks and driveability i still like the chevies but dependability they are pretty bad.

Chevy Avalanche .. It's like driving a really BIG car. All the amenities of the wifes Volvo and the ability to go just about anywhere. MPG are of little concern since the phone co. provides my daily driver. It does pinch a little when the $$ gets above $75 on a fill up ......

I will admit, my F-150 is getting me about 13 mpg city and 19 highway. I hear that in the 2006 F-150 there is supposed to be a better engine (hybrid, flex-fuel, whatever) that will make it get a ton better gas mileage. I read that in a Popular Mechanics magazine a few years back though, and haven't heard any updates since.

In a few years, if that does come true, I'm sure I'll be in the market for a newer truck -- just for the mileage.

Actually your F-150 more than likely has the 2 valve per cylinder setup and since then they've added a 3 valve/cylinder engine namely the 5.4 triton. As far as better mileage I don't think your going to find a whole lot difference in your 98 and the 04 - '08 model years. Much would of course depend on your rear axle ratio and of course your driving style.

I will say though that I've had a number of F-150's, '97,'04, '05. Both the 04/05 had the 5.4 3 valve/cylinder setup and both were very similar on gas (14 city and 16-18 hwy). I now run an '09 F-150 with basically the same engine, but now there is a 6 speed automatic tranny vs a 4 speed and that has added a near 2 mpg increase in mileage alone and more power and acceleration to boot.

Better things yet to come for F-150's starting in 2011 with the introduction of the Ecoboost line of engines which for the F-150 will be a v-6 direct injection turbo charged. Horsepower figures have them slightly better than the 5.4 v-8 now and with equal or better torque and 20% better mileage still.

I've always been a Chevy guy, and have an '07 Silverado and a nicely restored '54 3100 five-window, but I'll have a tough time sticking with GM now that they are owned by the government. Never thought I'd say it, but Ford is looking better all the time.

I grew up with my dad driving dodge trucks and have owned probly a half a dozen dodges over the last 10 years. I have never had a lick of trouble out of any of them but ive also never had one that got better than 10-12mpg. So..... last week I bought a 2000 F250 super duty with the 7.3l 4x4 and 73k. Got a deal that I couldnt pass up, I can tell you tho after I drive the wheel off this one Im sure Ill own another dodge.

Gentlemen,
From 1995 to 2006 I owned a Chevy Tahoe 4x4 and loved the vehicle, now I own a Ford Expedition and love it,
my Tahoe with the original 350 engine and little if no air polution garbage on it, got a true 18 miles to a gallon of gas
loaded down with everything a man could want for Grouse hunting and training, gun vault and all. Put 500,000 miles on the old Tahoe
before I traded her. We will see if the Expedition holds up as well, as we go along.

The new Ford Expedition 4x4, with large and medium sized flight cages, note no orange milk crate between the cages, the vehicle is almost
a foot less wide than the old Tahoe, with no gun vault space. In reality a smaller vehicle, it can however hold the cargo box with the big tow package. This vehicle gets almost 18 miles to a gallon with a fuel additive.
