My Dog just diagnosed with Cancer -
Feeling really bad.
My 4 year old Vizsla was diagnosed with Lymphoma this morning.
I'm kinda a tough old guy - but the tears were flowing down my cheeks in the vets office.

I hate to hear that. We lost one at eight to lymphoma. It is an evil disease, We opted for no aggressive treatment.

Dakota, so sorry to hear this. Those velcro dogs can really grab your heart! Absolutely no shame in being emotional about your dog - more people should care so much.
I wish this wouldn't have happened to your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you struggle through this.

Re: My Dog just diagnosed with Cancer -
Treatment for dog cancer has apparently come a long way - but not far enough.
My 4 year old female Vizsla had runny eyes for a few days. It was time for her shots so I brought her into my local vet. As she was being examined I commented that the lymph nodes under her jaw were also swollen. The more my vet checked her over the more she frowned.
She took a swab and tested, found high white blood cell counts. Referred us to a Sioux Falls vet the next day. That clinic tested and confirmed the Lymphoma.
My understanding - Vet suggested I could send her to the U of Minnesota or the U of Iowa for aggressive treatment. Cost of $2000 to $5000+. MAY put her into remission for 6 months. Vet said all it would do is remission - the lymphoma almost always comes back. We may put her on steroids to reduce some of the swelling, but that has its own side affects. Have to think about that one. Mostly we are going to keep her here at home where she is loved.
Here is the kick in the "bleep" - she is active and happy - but the vet said she expected the cancer to take her not in months, but in weeks. It is going to go fast.
Four years old and coming into her prime as a great pheasant dog. A couple AKC titles. Looked to breed her this summer but decided to wait until her next cycle in December - daughter was really excited about puppies - glad now we didn't - she would have been pregnant with cancer. More so she is a great friend and pet - whole house was shedding tears yesterday.
She was out in the yard this morning pointing blackbirds. Wish it was pheasant season so I could take her out for one last hunt.

Re: My Dog just diagnosed with Cancer -
I read a good article on giving your dog a "perfect day". It involved doing everything that the dog loves to do - everything just for them that day. I wish I'd had that opportunity to do that for our 10 yr old GSP we lost this year. A good friend of mine lost her EP to stomach cancer last month and she did the "perfect day" with her girl - she told me it helped her and the family to let go when the time came. They did steak and ice cream, bought a few pen reared birds and let her point and retrieve... took a long walk....let her sleep on the bed, etc. So sorry to hear about the diagnosis!

Re: My Dog just diagnosed with Cancer -
That is so sad. I had a dog with that cancer and I too decided that the least agressive treatment option was for me. She made it almost four months more and the only thing I would have asked for is to not have her get the cancer in the first place. She gained about 10 pounds with the extra treats and the steriods but it gave me time to get closer to accepting her loss.
I have heard all the jokes about why the indians rode Appaloosa's, I ride them because they great!
I put up with all the comments about the dogs I hunt with. I share my life with them for the same reason.
If you don't like it just keep walking away. It's possibly your best side anyway.

always bad to hear, but there is hope have you seen the cover to Gundog mag this month. It is a Vizsla named Bart, had a leg amputated due to cancer and still finished master hunter. Do not know how far along your dog is, but you may have him for a while longer.

Re: My Dog just diagnosed with Cancer -
15 days.
Lady was diagnosed with cancer just 15 days ago.
Put her on the steroids. They shrunk up the lymph glands. She ate well. Walked and ran and hunted on the 2 mile bike path.
Got extra spoiled and extra loving.
Ten days of steroids, and when they ran out the cancer showed back up with a vengeance.
Day 13 - Lymph nodes swelling - walked with me - she didn't feel like running
Day 14 - Just wanted to lay in her bed. I couldn't believe it could go this fast.
Day 15 - Wouldn't eat or drink. By afternoon couldn't raise her head and was rasping when she breathed.
Would just wag her tail and push her paw at me.
Have a wonderful vet who came to the house. I had my hand on her head and held her paw as the vet gave her the shot.
Bawled like a baby as I dug her grave.
Have tears in my eyes as I write this.

Re: My Dog just diagnosed with Cancer -
This story breaks my heart, that was quick. I feel fortunate that I hopefully will have the 4 mo. that my vet gave me on my GSP Petra , 7 years old, I have discussed her ACL surgeries on this forum. Monday found out about her cancer . She was my fix my heart dog when my 9yr old GSP died in my arms of heart failure, she even came with a heart patch on her side. I will not deny her anything, so nothing will change, and I will go hunting with her every minute that I can. The only thing that she ever did to annoy me was her temper tantrums that she throughs when I had to start limiting her time in the field so she would not cripple herself, what I wouldn’t give to be able to her her yelling at me from a half mile away for another 7 years. She has been a joy to be with . Enjoy your dogs this hunting season . Toni
