Irrateded bum excessive but licking

So over the last week my dog has been licking his bum lots, last weekend he did have runny stool but not really what I would call the runs. I don't see anything that looks like an infection. My first thought was he was just a bit irritated, diaper rash for a lack of a good explanation , so I just gave it a light coating of Vaseline, but it’s been 5 days now so I am starting to wonder.

Sounds like an anal gland issue. He may need to go to the vet and have them expressed. My mutt had that issue before and actually had to have one lanced. Not a pretty sight.

I have had friends who's dogs have had that, I had expected to find something that looked/felt like a boil/pimple how would I tell.

+1 on the anal glands. Maybe there's a YouTube on how to express them yourself? But best bet would be to get the dog to the vet, and have the vet show you how. You can do them internally or externally - I find externally easier if they're kept up and not impacted. Ask for a demo of both ways.
